Working Class Heroes: KKE event in honor of political prisoners held in Anafi island

In an emotional event held earlier on Saturday 4 July in the Aegean island of Anafi, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) honored the hundreds of communists and other political prisoners who were exiled in the island for several decades throughout the 20th century.

Paying tribute to all those heroes of the class struggle, the Central Committee of the KKE unveiled a monument created by sculptor Antonis Myrodias.

“The sacrifices and actions of our comrades is our own heritage, its their testament towards all of us that was never opened, because they never died” underlined Dimitris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the KKE, during his keynote speech.

The memorial which was unveiled bears the following words by the CC of the KKE: “Anafi, a glorious island. From 1924 to 1943 and from 1946 to 1949, hundreds of pioneer fighters of the people, members, cadres and supporters of the KKE lived here in exile, due to their ideas and struggles. We honor their sacrifice, their valor, their unyielding stance. June 2022”.

Except from Dimitris Koutsoumbas, greeting speeches were delivered by Roula Fragkakou, member of the Sectoral Committee of South Cyclades of the KKE, and Iakovos Roussos, mayor of Anafi, while the event included a cultural programme with songs and narration of memoirs written by exiled fighters.

It is reminded that during the two previous years, the KKE organized political events in two islands which served as places of exile and imprisonment for thousands of political prisoners, communists, left-wing and progressive political dissidents.

Last October, hundreds of communists, members and friends of the Communist Party participated in an emotional event in Gyaros island, while in 2020 a similar political event had been organized in "Greece's Dachau", the island of Makronissos. In both cases, special memorials dedicated to the unbending heroes of the class struggle were unveiled by the Party's Central Committee.

All these events serve as an act of remembrance and honor to those, communists or non-communist militants, who teached bravery and endurance, despite the unspeakable difficulties they faced.
