Last week, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) MP Liana Kanelli visited Armenia's capital Yerevan and Nagorno-Karabakh, after an invitation by the ambassador of Armenia in Athens, Gagik Ghalatchian. During the visit, Liana Kanelli met with the President of Nagorno-Karabakh Bako S. Sahakyan, the President of Nagorno-Karabakh's Parliament Ashot Gulian and the Deputy speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Eduard Sharmazanov. The Sunday edition of "Rizospastis" (17/4) includes an interesting detailed report of the visit. We translated and present some parts of the report below:

"The setback from the principles of Socialism's construction with the responsibility of CPSU, the counter-revolutionary overthrow and the capitalist restoration from above, also from the CPSU, revived nationalist tensions and brought to the forefront the interests of each country's bourgeoisie after the dissolution of the USSR which created by the plundering of peoples' property. Since 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh has declared it's independence from Azerbaijan, but without gaining international recognition"

"What the counter-revolution highlighted as a dominant element was that, overall, the Caucasus region turned into another field of inter-imperialist confrontation between Russia on the one hand and US, NATO, EU and their allies on the other hand. A confrontation which is based on the conflict for the enormous energy reserves of the Caspian and Black Seas, their pipelines to Europe and the other markets and geostrategic spheres of influence"

"The KKE MP stressed that the Party had foreseen the current developments of conflicts which aren't taking place for human rights but for the interests of multinational corporations and enterpreneurs related to Energy. "The people must target those who profit from the war" she noted, refering also to the war that NATO's imperialists are making in Syria and elsewhere, dissolving countries, sowing destruction and causing caravans of refugees, of uprooted people, such as those arriving in Greece. Liana Kanelli explained that "the purpose of the visit is to see and judge (by ourselves)" and that KKE gives daily the battle for peoples' briefing, in order to be able to see the causes and to contribute as much as they can in the stoppage of young people's killing in new wars for foreign interests"

Liana Kanelli also visited the Yerablur military cemetery in Yerevan as well as the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum.

From it's side, the government of Azerbaijan and more specifically the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed "severe discomfort", talking about "provocative action".
