Eliseos Vagenas: Overthrowing the decayed capitalist system and struggling for socialism is a necessity of our times

Overthrowing the decayed capitalist system and struggling for socialism is a necessity of our times

Excerpts from a speech delivered by Eliseos Vagenas, member of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and head of the International Relations Section of the CC, at an event organized during the 34th Anti-Imperialist Camp of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) on the theme: “With the peoples all the way to freedom, against the system of injustice and war”:

Aleka Papariga: The KKE’s stance towards bourgeois governments is a valuable tool for our current struggles

“Under capitalism, no government is an independent authority. Power is exercised by the bourgeoisie, and the bourgeois state is the instrument of its power, to which all institutions are subordinate. The decisions of the EU and NATO are binding and take precedence over national constitutions and national legislation. Governments of bourgeois management cannot and do not want to abolish the law of laws: capitalist profit. The defence of the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie by all means is inevitable and obligatory. Laws are abolished through the revolutionary overthrow of the system itself and the establishment of a new form of power: of the working class in a socialist communist society."

Communist and Workers' Parties: We intensify the struggle against NATO and its warmongering decisions

Protest during the NATO Summit in The Hague, June 2025.
Joint statement

We intensify the struggle against NATO and its warmongering decisions

At the June 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, member states committed to raise military spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. This escalation, cynically framed as a commitment to “defend democracy and freedom” and “support Ukraine,” is in fact a war agenda serving the declining hegemony of Euro-Atlantic capital in the face of increased inter-imperialist rivalry.

The KKE and its revolutionary action are a thorn in the side of all kinds of anti-communists

Comment by the International Relations Section of the CC of the KKE:

The ongoing struggle of the KKE and the mass mobilizations currently taking place in Greece, in which the KKE and KNE are playing a leading role, have placed all kinds of anti-communists in a very difficult position. Supporters of Greece’s greater involvement in the war, alongside Israel and the USA, accuse the KKE of supporting ‘the mullahs’, the ‘theocratic regime’ of Iran,  ‘terrorists’ and even ‘conservatism’ through its stance. They also claim that it it ‘fosters anti-Semitism’ because it supports the just struggle of the Palestinian people, who are being massacred by the murderous state of Israel.

The murderous state of Israel, with its attack against Iran and backed by the USA, NATO, and the EU, has lit the fuse of war, with the danger of escalation across the entire region clearly visible," said the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Dimitris Koutsoumbas, on Monday.

Furthermore, the General Secretary added:

European Communist Action: The peoples must condemn Israel’s warmongering

The ongoing aggression of the murderous Israeli state—particularly in Palestine—is now spreading to other countries in the region. We strongly condemn the Israeli attack on Iran, which also targeted civilians, and express our solidarity with the people of Iran.

This act of aggression by Israel cannot be seen in isolation. All of its imperialist allies—including the United States, NATO, and the European Union—bear responsibility, whether through direct or indirect support, ongoing military, trade, or political cooperation.

Turkish and Greek young communists against NATO — Joint Statement by TKG and KNE

Joint Statement by the Communist Youth of Turkey (TKG) and the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) concerning NATO's military drills in the region:

NATO is conducting a massive military exercise involving 12,000 troops until June 9th in the Balkans, centered around Alexandroupolis/Dedeağaç. Led by the USA, which relentlessly seeks to tighten its grip on the region, this operation is not about defense—it is a blatant act of aggression, just like all other NATO maneuvers. As always, the ones caught in the crosshairs are the working people.

Partisans for Peace: On the 80th anniversary of Italy's liberation - Against rearmament and imperialist war

On April 25th, 1945, the National Liberation Committee for Northern Italy (CLNAI) declared a general uprising in all territories still occupied by fascist forces. The partisan troops, with the communists at the forefront, liberated the main cities of Northern Italy and put an end to more than twenty years of fascist oppression.

Eighty years after those events, the Communist Front of Italy, with the support of the Front of Communist Youth, is launching a popular mobilization for April 25th, reviving the slogan "Partisans for Peace" against imperialist war and historical revisionism regarding Italy's war of liberation.

In a statement about the 26th anniversary of NATO's imperialist bombing of Yugoslavia, which took place from 24 March to 10 June 1999,  the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia (NKPJ) stresses the following:

Today, as we mark 26 years since the brutal NATO aggression against the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, we stand united in condemning the imperialist rampage that brought devastation to our homeland. The scale of the bombing was immense—cities were reduced to rubble, countless civilians lost their lives, and the destruction of vital infrastructure continues to affect the health of our people and the environment even today.

What is "ReArm Europe"? Multi-tool of warfare against the peoples

The EU has announced the “ReArm Europe” program worth 800 billion euros, signalling a rapid increase in its war spending.

It is thus reinforcing the war economy strategy and armaments of the previous period, escalating its involvement in the imperialist war in Ukraine. Its aim is to play a leading role on the Ukrainian front in conditions of heightened Euro-Atlantic antagonisms and US-Russian bargaining.

KKE on Trump-Putin call: Imperialist peace and arrangements are the other side of imperialist war

In a statement issued on Wednesday 19 March, the Press Office of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) refers to the recent call between U.S President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the situation in Ukraine. The statement (here in Greek) reads:

“The drumbeats about a ceasefire in the 3-year imperialist war in Ukraine, between the US, NATO, EU and capitalist Russia, cannot overshadow the real facts and the painful reality of the continuation of the war that tortures the peoples of Ukraine and Russia, as well as the dangers for other peoples.

No to the rearmament of Europe: Statement on the imperialist war in Ukraine and the EU’s arms race

Joint statement from the Communist Front Political Bureau and the Front of Communist Youth National Secretariat on the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine:

1. Three years after the escalation of the war in Ukraine between the Russian Federation and the US-EU-NATO Euro-Atlantic alliance, the conditions under which peace talks or cease-fire negotiations are presented once again demonstrate that this war has nothing to do with the “defense of European values” and democratic freedoms, nor with the alleged “anti-fascist” values that are instrumentally invoked by both factions.

D. Koutsoumbas: The KKE's position on the nature of the war in Ukraine is confirmed once again

During the debate in the Parliament on 5 March, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the CC of the KKE, referred, among other things, to international developments and the war fronts, noting the following:

“One of the things you told the people to justify our country’s involvement in the war in Ukraine in the role of a NATO stooge was that we are supposedly on the 'right side of history'. Among other things, this involvement has hit the pockets of our people, especially due to high energy bills.

Joint struggle of the communists in Greece and Turkey against the US bases and NATO

Elisseos Vagenas, member of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and Head of the Party's International Relations Section, gave an interview to the Turkish newspaper "Cumhuriyet":

— Greek newspapers Dimokratia and Ta Nea claimed that US President Donald Trump has decided to close the alleged US base in Alexandroupoli, Greece. However, US officials issued a statement on the allegations, saying that “the US does not have a base in Alexandroupoli, it is a Greek facility to which the US has access under the Mutual Defense Cooperation Treaty.” What is your assessment of these discussions?
