KKE blasts Mitsotakis' government over Ukrainian drone mission in Greek waters

The discovery of a Ukrainian naval drone carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives off the coast of the Greek island of Lefkada has sparked political controversy in Greece and renewed concerns over the country's growing involvement in the NATO-backed imperialist war in Ukraine.

According to revelations published by Rizospastis, Organ of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the drone had reportedly been assigned to strike a Russian Navy vessel escorting a commercial ship linked to Russia's so-called "shadow fleet."

Following diplomatic démarches by the Greek government, Ukrainian authorities reportedly acknowledged the incident and provided an explanation regarding the drone's mission. The revelations prompted a sharp reaction from the KKE, which accused the government of exposing the country and its people to serious dangers through its active support for NATO's war plans and its deepening involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement issued on June 6, the KKE points out:

"The Greek government is accountable to the Greek people. Its policy of involvement in the war is dragging both the people and the country into the abyss of imperialist war.

The revelations published by Rizospastis concerning the mission of the Ukrainian naval drone that was found in Lefkada, carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives, are extremely serious and further expose the government's responsibilities.

Once again, it is confirmed that the government's active support for the Zelensky regime, its alignment with NATO's plans, and its involvement in the war in Ukraine are creating enormous dangers for the Greek people.

The government is obliged to provide clear answers to the Greek people. How was it possible for such a drone to enter Greek territorial waters? What other military operations linked to the war in Ukraine are taking place in the wider region? What commitments has the government undertaken within the framework of NATO and the European Union?

The recent apology issued by the Ukrainian side does not change the essence of the matter. The facts demonstrate that Greece is becoming increasingly entangled in the war, with unpredictable consequences for the people.

The only way forward is the struggle against the country's involvement in the imperialist war, against NATO's plans and against the use of Greek territory, infrastructure and military facilities for war purposes.

The Greek people have no interest in choosing between rival imperialist camps. Their interest lies in strengthening the struggle against war, against imperialist involvement and for disengagement from the dangerous plans that are turning the country into a target."
