What does Berlin fear? Soviet symbols banned again ahead of 9 May anniversary!

For yet another consecutive year, German authorities in Berlin are imposing restrictions around Soviet war memorials during the anniversary of the Great Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples on 9 May, banning Soviet flags and symbols associated with the Red Army that defeated Nazism!

According to an administrative order issued by Berlin police, the restrictions will apply from 8 to 9 May around the Soviet memorials in Treptow, Mitte and Pankow.

"May 9, 1945 marks 80 years since the Great Anti-Fascist Victory when Nazi Germany surrendered and the peoples of the world, with the decisive role of the Red Army and the Soviet Union under the leadership of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) as the organizer and inspirer of this struggle, brought fascism to its knees across Europe.

Various activities are being held by the party organizations of the KKE and KNE throughout Greece to commemorate the 80^th anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Victory.

On 4 May 2025, at the Kaisariani Shooting Range, right next to the site where on May Day 1944 the Nazis executed 200 communists, a large rally of the Attica Party Organization of the KKE was held to mark the 80^th anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples, with Dimitris Koutsoumbas, GS of the CC of the KKE, as the keynote speaker.

Today we commemorate 79 years of the Day of the Great Anti-fascist Victory of the Peoples on the 9th of May 1945. We remember and express our gratitude to the heroic Red Army, the Soviet people and the resistance movements who fought and sacrificed themselves against fascism, against the most barbaric form of capitalism. Against the organized operation by the monopolies, by the bourgeois class to attack the power of the working class and the communists.

 

What does Berlin fear? Soviet flag banned once again on the occasion of 9 May anniversary

For a third consecutive year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the People's Great Anti-Fascist Victory on 9 May, Berlin's local authorities banned the Soviet flag and communist symbols in an effort to limit celebrations at the three Red Army monuments in the city, Treptower Park, Tiergarten and Pankow.

The shameful decision was taken under the pretext of “safety” and “avoidance of violent incidents” and was confirmed by the German capital’s top administrative court confirmed on Monday.

 

The KKE honors the 9th of May, Day of the Great Anti-fascist Victory of the Peoples

The Press Office of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) issued a statement on the 9th of May, Day of the People's Great Anti-fascist Victory, which notes, among other things, the following:

"World War II, like World War I, was the result of imperialist rivalries for the new division of markets, territories and spheres of influence, as well as their sharpening in conditions of capitalist economic crisis [...]

A shameful multimedia billboard appeared in Times Square, New York City, on Monday 9 May, calling the victory of the Soviet Red Army over the Nazis a "day of shame"! 

The billboard, paid by the campaign "Unite with Ukraine", was referring to Russia and the ongoing imperialist war in Ukraine. 

"MAY 9, RUSSIAN VICTORY SHAME DAY" was the message written in the billboard, provoking numerous negative comments in social media. 

KKE: Statement on the 77th anniversary of the Great Antifascist Victory of the Peoples

On 7/5/2022, the Press Office of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece  (KKE) issued a statement (here in Greek) on the 77th  anniversary of the Great Anti-fascist Victory of the Peoples, which notes, among other things, the following:

“The 9th of May inspires the peoples, it teaches them to have faith in their own power.

The USSR managed to achieve the feat of the anti-fascist victory thanks to the superiority of the socialist system, workers’ power, and the advantages of the socialization of the means of production and the central planning of the economy, which today are derided by the leaders of capitalist Russia (...) The workers’–people’s forces in Greece and all over the world will always commemorate the 20,000,000 Soviet soldiers and people that fell victims with admiration and respect.(...) 

Communists in Berlin honored the Great Antifascist Victory despite police ban

Communists in Berlin honored on Sunday the 77th anniversary of the Great Antifascist Victory of the People's despite the police ban which prohibited the use of the red flag with the sickle and hammer. As 902.gr portal reported, members and friends of the Communist Parties of Greece (KKE) and the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) organized a joint commemoration event at Treptow Park, where the Soviet monument stands.

 

Treptow Park is the burial place for 7,000 heroic soldiers of the Red Army who fought for the liberation of Berlin. The joint event by KKE and TKP supporters was also a response to the recent vandalism of the monument with fascist symbols and racist slogans.

In a statement about the 77th anniversary of the Great Antifascist Victory of the Peoples, the 9th of May, the Secretariat of the Initiative of Communist and Workers' Parties issued the following statement:

We proudly commemorate 9 May, a milestone of the Great Antifascist Victory of the Peoples. We pay tribute to the millions of people who sacrificed their lives, fought with guns in their hands, and struggled against the fascist imperialist Axis of Germany–Italy–Japan and their allies. 

KKE: The Red flag will not whitewash capitalist Russia

They are looking for an “absolution certificate” in the Red Flag

The 9^thof May is approaching and the Russian bourgeoisie once again utilizes the red flag to take advantage of the anti-fascist and pro-Soviet sentiments of the Russian people. In areas occupied by the Russian army in Ukraine, the red flag of Victory is raised, i.e. the flag of the unit of the Red Army that occupied the Reichstag in May 1945. The CP of the Russian Federation (CPRF) went one step further. It introduced a bill to replace the current tricolour of Russia, the flag of the tsars and the traitor Vlasov, a Nazi collaborator in the Second World War, with the red flag. 

The memory of the Antifascist Victory does not fade away — Socialism is the future!

76 years ago, the Red Army raised the Red Flag in the Reichstag, marking the Great Antifascist Victory of the Peoples and the defeat of Nazism. That was a fierce and bloody struggle, led by the Soviet Union with the decisive contribution of many anti-fascist, partisan movements, with the Communist Parties at the forefront.

“Anyone who loves freedom, owes such a debt to the Red Army that it can never be repaid”. This phrase of Ernest Hemingway encompasses the whole symbolism of the 9th May 1945; the day of the Great Antifascist Victory of the people. 

The day when the red flag with the sickle and hammer raised over Reichstag, in Berlin, thus marking the triumph of the Red Army and the Soviet Union over the monster of Nazism.

KKE campaign to honor the 75th anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the People

On the occasion of the 75 years since the Anti-Fascist People’s Victory, the Party Organisations Abroad of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) organize a series of events that include visits in 75 anti-fascist memorials across Europe. In an announcement for the 74 years since the Great Anti-fascist Victory of the peoples, the Press Bureau of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) notes:

The anniversary of May 9, 74 years since the end of World War II, is not"Europe Day", as it has been unhistoricallyattempted to be established in the last few years by the representatives of this reactionary structure. It is the Day of the Great Anti-fascist Victory of the Peoples, the immortal epic of the Soviet Red Army and the Resistance movements of Europe, with the vanguard and decisive role of the Communist Parties.

Statement of the CC of the KKE for the 73 years since the Great Antifascist Victory

The Press Bureau of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece published the following announcement for the 9th of May, day of the Anti-fascist Victory of the Peoples’:
