KKE in EU Parliament: Urgent question about the arrest of Kononovich brothers in Ukraine

With a question submitted to the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, the European Parliament Group of the  Communist Party of Greece (KKE) denounces the arrest of the two members of the Leninist Communist Youth Union of Ukraine, Mikhail and Aleksander Kononovich (read here) and demands from the EU Commission to express its position on the issue of anti-communist persecutions in the country.

More specifically the urgent question submitted by the KKE MEP Kostas Papadakis reads:

“The arrest of the First Secretary of the Leninist Communist Youth Union of Ukraine, Mikhail Kononovich and his brother Aleksander, by the Ukrainian authorities raises serious concerns, while there are allegations that their lives are in danger.

At a time when the imperialist conflict is raging following the Russian invasion on the basis of its competition with the USA, NATO and the EU, the Ukrainian government proceeds to the unnecessary persecution of the two young communists. It utilizes anti-communism, which consists an official policy of the EU as well and implements the unacceptable anti-communist legal framework that unequivocally and provocatively equates fascism with communism. At the same time, fascist neo-Nazi groups operate undisturbed as part of the Ukrainian army, attacking persecuted Ukrainians while they are utilized for year against the Ukrainian people, from the 2014 with the open US-NATO-EU intervention in the country to this day.

Anti-communism, which always accompanies the anti-popular policy, is especially sharpened in the conditions of imperialist war, seeking to lead the people behind one or the other imperialist camp. Today, in particular, there is an attempt to erase the collective memory of the Ukrainian and Russian people who for decades lived peacefully in the conditions of socialism in the USSR.

Based on the above, the KKE MEP submits the following question:

“How does the Vice President of the Commission/ High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy respond to the urgent demand for the immediate release of the two newly arrested communists, as well as for the lifting of all anti-communism persecutions and prohibitions in the country?”
