The revolutionary legacy of Fidel Castro and the struggle to defend socialist Cuba against US imperialist aggression were at the centre of a major political discussion held during the 52nd KNE-Odigitis Festival, organized by the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) in Athens.
The event, marking the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth, brought together a large audience to discuss the historical significance of the Cuban Revolution, proletarian internationalism and the challenges facing Cuba amid Washington’s escalating economic pressure and imperialist threats.

Addressing the gathering, KKE Central Committee member Aris Evangelidis stressed that honoring Fidel’s legacy is inseparable from defending the achievements of the Cuban Revolution and opposing the US blockade. He accused Washington of seeking to economically strangle Cuba, dismantle its revolutionary gains and subordinate the island to US strategic interests.
The KKE cadre also highlighted Fidel’s critical stance toward developments in the Soviet Union during the period of Perestroika, emphasizing his opposition to the attacks on communist ideology and the revolutionary history of the USSR. He linked Fidel’s warnings to the KKE’s conclusions regarding the dangers of introducing capitalist economic mechanisms into socialist construction.
The KKE demanded the immediate lifting of the US blockade, Cuba’s removal from Washington’s list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism, an end to sanctions targeting Cuban institutions and organizations, and the withdrawal of all threats of military aggression against the island.
Cuban Ambassador to Greece Aramís Fuente Hernández thanked the KKE and KNE for their longstanding solidarity, stressing that Cuba is facing an unprecedented intensification of the US economic blockade, including severe restrictions on energy supplies.
He accused Washington of attempting to provoke a humanitarian crisis and then blame socialism for the suffering caused by its own economic warfare. Concluding his address, the Cuban ambassador reaffirmed the enduring significance of Fidel’s revolutionary legacy:
“Fidel lives and will continue to inspire the struggles of our peoples. Cuba will prevail. Until victory, always!”.
