Statement of the Political Bureau of the PCTE: After the European Elections

Once the provisional results of the European Elections held on June 9th are known, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain declares the following:

1) The general results at the European level and the particular ones in our country are giving a similar picture. On one side, there is a clear majority of what we call the Europeanist consensus. Although they express different options for capitalist management, all the political forces agreeing with the support to the European Union and the economic and military strategic plans being carried out within it belong to such consensus.

Communists in Spain and Argentina: Milei and Sanchez are different sides of the same coin

Concerning the recent diplomatic row between the governments of Argentina and Spain, the Argentine Communist Party and the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) issued the following joint statement:

On the situation of Spanish-Argentine relations

Using as an argument the statements that Javier Milei made at a political event in Madrid last Sunday, the Government of Pedro Sánchez has decided to withdraw the Spanish ambassador from Buenos Aires. The confrontation between two capitalist management models that represent different sides of the same coin is thus tinged with a diplomatic crisis.

PCTE: On the formation of the new social democratic coalition government under Pedro Sánchez

The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) makes the following considerations on the recent investiture of Pedro Sanchez and the formation of a new social democratic coalition government in our country:

The investiture initiates the third consecutive government led by the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, a government that is born in the middle of a context of internal and external tension, and before the horizon of an unstable legislature and of great relevance for the future of Spanish capitalism and its concretion in the power bloc.

Spanish Elections 2023: PCTE communists emerge strengthened under negative political conditions

The results of July 23rd elections in Spain did not pronounce a clear victory for the ruling social democratic PSOE or the opposition right parties, with no side gaining the parliamentary majority needed to form a government. The turnout in the elections to determine the 350-seat parliament was 70%, with 37.5 registered million voters.

The right-wing People's Party (PP) won the elections with 136 seats, increasing the number by 47 compared to December 2019 elections. The social democratic Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), headed by PM Pedro Sanchez, won 122 seats.

Spain: PCTE communists ready to fight another battle after positive results in local elections

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for early general elections on July 23 after his social democratic party, PSOE, and its major ally, Unidas Podemos, suffered heavy losses across the country in regional and municipal elections.

On the other hand, the conservative opposition (Partido Popular) and the far-right (Vox party) posted powerful gains in polls. In total, Partido Popular gained more than 7 million votes (31.53%), which is almost 2 million more voters in relation to 2019 elections, while PSOE social democrats received 6.3 million votes (28.1%). A disturbing feature is the rise of the far-right Vox, which received 1.6 million votes, related to 812 thousand in 2019.

The following speech was delivered by Ástor García, General Secretary of Communist party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) at the quadripartite meeting held on 8th of July 2022 in Athens:

Comrades,

We are holding this important meeting in an especially difficult moment for class struggle. Spain: PCTE communists expose government's celebrations over minimum wage increase

Spain will increase the national minimum wage by 3.6% to 1,167 euros ($1,334) per month, Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz said on Wednesday. Calling the increase “a very important milestone”, Diaz said that seeking to compete with other nations by pushing down salaries in the past had led to a weak economy and precarious businesses, and was profoundly unjust.

The social democratic government of Pedro Sanchez is trying to present this decision as a great success of pro-people policy. However the rise of inflation alone diminishes the increase and the minimum wage remains below the poverty line.
