Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin dies at 96

Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin died on Wednesday, as a result of leukemia and multiple organ failure, Xinhua news agency announced. He was 96 years old .

Jiang served as President from 1993 to 2003 with a policy focusing on the further liberalization of China's capitalist economy and the attraction of foreign investments. He is often credited by western media for successfully integrating China into the “international community”. 
 
Born in 1926, Jiang served the Communist Party of China from various positions. He became Mayor of Shanghai in 1985 and was elevated to national politics in 1987 having the support of Deng Xiaoping.

The death of Jiang Zemin comes in a tumultuous period for China, with widespread protests against the government's COVID policies, as well as with workers' mobilizations for the working conditions at iPhone factory.
