KKE General Secretary: The alternative is workers’ power, not another capitalist government

The strengthening of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in the next parliamentary elections would mark “a step forward for the people,” KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas stressed on Thursday during a major political event in Thessaloniki, held in the framework of the city's International Fair (TIF).

His speech focused on current political developments, the Mitsotakis government’s economic policy and the KKE’s political proposal.

Koutsoumbas sharply attacked the government’s economic announcements at the TIF, arguing that the much-advertised benefits of capitalist growth have gone overwhelmingly to big business while workers continue to face declining purchasing power, attacks on collective bargaining, long working hours and heavy taxation. He pointed to soaring corporate and banking profits as evidence that the “pie” has indeed grown — but that the people have become poorer.

The KKE leader also denounced Greece’s deeper involvement in the war economy and imperialist rivalries, criticizing billions spent on armaments and the country’s strategic alignment with NATO, the EU and Israel. He argued that these policies serve the interests and international ambitions of the Greek ruling class rather than the security and needs of the working people.

Against this course, Koutsoumbas presented the KKE’s proposal for workers’ and people’s power, disengagement from the EU and NATO, socialization of the concentrated means of production and centrally planned development based on popular needs rather than capitalist profit.

Turning to the coming elections, he rejected attempts to frighten the people with the prospect of instability in the bourgeois political system. A stronger KKE, he said, would reinforce the changing balance of forces inside the workers’ movement and strengthen the real opposition to the New Democracy government and its anti-people policies.

“The strength that the people give to the KKE remains with the KKE and in this great effort on behalf of the people,” Koutsoumbas stressed. “It is neither transformed nor bargained away”.
