According to the KKE, the European Union is seeking to strengthen the position of its monopolies amid intensifying competition with the United States and China for supremacy in the global capitalist economy.
The communists warned that this rivalry is unfolding alongside mounting war conflicts and the prospect of a new capitalist economic crisis. The KKE particularly denounced plans for a European Security Council and an EU equivalent of NATO’s Article 4, arguing that such mechanisms would deepen the bloc’s militarization. It also criticized further EU support for the Ukrainian government, including Patriot air-defense systems and additional financing for the war economy, describing these measures as part of the escalating confrontation with capitalist Russia.
The statement accused the Commission of placing the costs of this strategy on working people through new taxes, austerity measures, high energy prices, longer and more flexible working hours, intensified digital surveillance and further commercialization of essential services. It also condemned plans to strengthen Frontex and tighten the EU’s migration policy.
According to the KKE, growing popular dissatisfaction with liberal, social-democratic and other parties that support the EU’s strategic direction is increasingly being channeled toward far-right forces, which it described as a useful reserve for the political system rather than an alternative to it.
The KKE concluded that the interests of working people cannot be served by reforming the EU. Instead, it called for an independent workers’ and popular struggle aimed at breaking with “the system of exploitation and war,” withdrawing from the EU, NATO and every imperialist alliance, and establishing workers’ power.
