Syrian Communist Party honors the memory of its long-time leader Ammar Bakdash

On the first anniversary of the death (13 July 2025) of communist internationalist leader Ammar Bakdash, General Secretary of the Syrian Communist Party, the Party held a commemorative event abroad to honor his memory, the 902 portal reported

Addressing the event, Khaled Bakdash, member of the Central Committee and son of Ammar Bakdash, stated among other things: "To me, he was a father. But before and beyond that, he was a comrade who taught me—through his actions before his words—that communism is not merely a political affiliation, but a moral and human commitment to the workers, the peasants and all working people, to everyone who suffers injustice and exploitation."

Referring to Ammar Bakdash's unwavering commitment to Marxism-Leninism, he added:

"Even under the most difficult circumstances, he remained steadfast in his conviction that the working masses are the force capable of changing the course of history, and that socialism is not a dream to be postponed, but an objective necessity arising from the contradictions and crises of capitalism."

On behalf of Ammar Bakdash's family and all his comrades in the Syrian Communist Party, Khaled Bakdash expressed profound appreciation and gratitude to the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), noting:

"The comrades of the KKE embodied the highest ideals of proletarian internationalism. They stood by my father during the most difficult period of his life, embracing him as comrades and friends, accompanying him on his final journey, and demonstrating that solidarity among communists is not merely a slogan, but a militant and moral practice that grows stronger in times of adversity."

It is recalled that in a recent statement, the International Relations Section of the Central Committee of the KKE noted the following regarding the Syrian communist leader:

"Following the takeover of Syria by the jihadists on 8 December 2024—who enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, the support of the United States, NATO and the European Union, with Turkey, the Gulf monarchies and Israel playing a particularly significant role—a campaign of persecution and massacres targeting political opponents, as well as ethnic and religious minorities, was launched. Comrade Bakdash became a target of the jihadists and, together with his family, found refuge in Athens within the framework of the close relations of internationalist solidarity maintained between the Syrian Communist Party and the KKE. On 29 January 2025, the authorities in Damascus announced the dissolution of the Syrian Communist Party, the confiscation of its assets, and further intensified the persecution."

The KKE also emphasized: "The KKE salutes the steadfast continuation of the struggle of the Syrian Communist Party, the working class and the people of Syria, carried out under exceptionally difficult and complex conditions, in defense of their economic, political and democratic rights, and for the expulsion of all occupying forces from their country's territory".
