Communist Initiative of Cyprus on the Anniversaries of the Treacherous Coup and the Turkish Invasion

The Communist Initiative of Cyprus issued a statement marking the anniversaries of the 15 July 1974 fascist coup d'état, orchestrated by the Athens military junta and EOKA B, and the 20 July Turkish invasion, warning against new imperialist plans concerning the Cyprus issue.

The statement (here in Greek) reads:

"This year's grim anniversaries of the treacherous coup d'état and the Turkish invasion coincide with a period marked by increasingly dangerous developments surrounding the Cyprus issue.

Imperialist plans in the Eastern Mediterranean are intensifying, while reports and political interventions are multiplying in preparation for new settlement proposals centered on a so-called "loose federation" which, in reality, amounts to a confederation and the consolidation of two separate state entities. At the same time, efforts are underway to replace the system of guarantees with a new NATO-led "security" framework, leading to Cyprus' even deeper integration into NATO's strategic plans.

These developments are a continuation of the very same strategy that gave rise to the Cyprus problem. The treacherous coup carried out by the Athens military junta and EOKA B, followed by the Turkish invasion, was the culmination of a long process in which foreign NATO imperialist interventions exploited and reinforced nationalism and chauvinism, ultimately leading to the violent division of our country and our people in order to impose imperialist interests in the region.

Fifty-two years later, the occupation and the division of our people continue. Refugees remain unable to return to their homes, colonization of the occupied territories is becoming further entrenched, and the very same forces that played the leading role in creating the Cyprus problem now seek to present new arrangements that consolidate the consequences of the crime of 1974 as a "solution." The so-called "loose federation" currently being promoted does not constitute a genuine federal solution, but rather a confederal arrangement—in other words, a form of two-state settlement that preserves and legitimizes ethnic division. Likewise, replacing the guarantor powers with a new NATO "security" framework would not free Cyprus from foreign dependence; instead, it would further transform the island into a strategic outpost for Euro-Atlantic plans in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Communist Initiative of Cyprus pays tribute to the communists, the democratic resistance fighters, and all those who resisted the treacherous coup and the Turkish invasion, defended the Republic of Cyprus, and even sacrificed their lives in opposing the plans of imperialism.

Today, more than ever, the common struggle of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot workers is needed against both the occupation and the plans aimed at permanently entrenching the division of our people. No solution can emerge from new imperialist arrangements or from Cyprus' deeper involvement in Euro-Atlantic strategic designs.

The Communist Initiative of Cyprus reaffirms its position in favor of a united and independent Cyprus, free from occupation troops, foreign military bases, guarantor powers, and every form of foreign military presence. We stand for one homeland, one state, one sovereignty, one international legal personality and one citizenship, with one people comprising Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites and Latins, free from ethnic divisions and discrimination. One people, regardless of language or religion. A state that recognizes and respects national, linguistic, religious and other distinct characteristics, including cultural traditions and historical heritage. A single economy and unified institutions that bring to the forefront the true class nature of social conflict: that the fundamental contradiction is between workers and the capitalist class and its political power, regardless of language or religion.

At the same time, we reaffirm that the struggle for the liberation and reunification of Cyprus cannot be separated from the struggle against imperialism and the capitalist system that gives rise to wars, occupation and partition. Only the organized common struggle of the working class and the popular strata can open the way towards a truly free, independent and reunified homeland".
