Communist Party of Denmark: US-Denmark agreement threatens Greenland's security

As tensions over Greenland intensify and Denmark and the United States move towards a new agreement concerning the strategically important Arctic territory, the Communist Party of Denmark (DKP) has warned against the further militarization of the region and the growing rivalry among major powers. The Party rejects the presentation of increased military cooperation as a guarantee of security, arguing that it could instead turn Greenland into a frontline of future conflicts. 

 

Greenland: A "Northern Front" of Inter-Imperialist Rivalry

The developments surrounding Greenland should not be treated as a diplomatic anomaly or as the product of individual political choices. 

They are a concentrated expression of the contemporary phase of imperialism, in which the sharpening competition among capitalist powers drags strategic regions and smaller peoples into conflicts not of their own making. 

KKE warns in the European Parliament: Unacceptable U.S. threats over Greenland; EU and NATO complicit

An intervention in the debate on U.S. threats and the escalating rivalry with the EU centered on Greenland was made by the European Parliament Group of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) during the plenary session in Strasbourg. The Party’s MEP, Kostas Papadakis, stated the following in his speech:

“We condemn the unacceptable threats of military intervention by the United States, NATO ally Denmark, and the EU against Greenland, following their military intervention against the people of Venezuela, as well as the threats against the Cuban people and the planned U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran.

 

Communist Party of Denmark: Hands Off Greenland!

Greenland's dependence on Denmark is the result of colonial subjugation – not a voluntary choice. If Greenland wants to break this dependence, the choice is the Greenlanders'; but Denmark cannot run away from its obligations. 

The Arctic, and thus also Greenland, has enormous geostrategic importance, among other things due to its location close to Russia and China. With the melting of the ice in the Arctic, the coveted northern corridor is moving closer to reality. Trade routes are about to change, and thus interest in Greenland and its resources increases. It is increasing as the monopolies' competition for markets globally is intensifying day by day.
