In a 38-minute tirade before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump boasted about abducting foreign leaders, bombing boats in the Caribbean and launching an unjust war against Iran, while branding Cuba a “failed state.” He also singled out the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), the Democratic Socialists of America and “Antifa” as part of an alleged “coordinated subversive network” controlled by Cuba.
“That’s a complete and unadulterated fabrication,” declared CPUSA Co-Chair Rossana Cambron. “Our policies are made exclusively in the USA.”
Trump’s speech was filled with extravagant claims about the strength of the US economy and the supposed prosperity of its people. Declaring that the country had entered a “Golden Age” under his leadership, he proclaimed that the entire world was being lifted by the wealth, strength and momentum of a newly energized United States.
Yet while lecturing other nations about the importance of sovereignty, Trump openly boasted about his administration’s violations of that very principle. He cited the abduction of Venezuela’s elected president and first lady, the opening of the country’s oil resources to US monopolies, and military strikes against boats that have so far claimed 234 lives. He also defended the unprovoked US war against Iran.
Turning his attacks on socialist Cuba, Trump described the island as a “haven for foreign adversaries” and boasted that its Communist Party was facing “the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under.” The Cuban delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall in protest.
Trump concluded his anti-communist tirade by declaring: “Communism will never be coming to America, but freedom will be coming to Cuba.”
CPUSA Co-Chair Joe Sims rejected Trump’s accusations against the Party and defended its longstanding relations with Cuba.
“Our relations with Cuba are open and public. We affirm our right to have those relations and affirm the right of the Cuban people to live free of imperialist aggression as well as to exercise their right to self-determination,” he stated.
Anita Waters, Organizational Secretary of the CPUSA, also condemned Washington’s decades-long economic war against the Cuban people.
“Trump calls Cuba a failed state, but the only failure is the cruel and bankrupt policy of the United States, which seeks to starve the Cuban people into submission,” she declared.
Responding directly to Trump’s accusations of communist subversion, Waters delivered a pointed message to the US president: “We don’t conspire. We organize. Too late, Mr. President. We’ve been here for 107 years and we’re not going away”.
