Shut Down All U.S–British Bases in Greece and Cyprus!

By Nikos Mottas

The recent alert in Cyprus following threats of Iranian drone and retaliatory missile strikes once again exposes a dangerous reality that governments in Athens and Nicosia persistently attempt to obscure: the presence of U.S., NATO and British military bases turns both Greece and Cyprus into potential targets in an expanding imperialist war.

For days now, the wider region has been moving ever closer to the possibility of a generalized confrontation in the Middle East. The escalation triggered by the aggressive policies of the United States and Israel against Iran has already created a climate of extreme tension across the entire Eastern Mediterranean.

Communist Initiative of Cyprus: The island is becoming a target for retaliation - Shut down the British bases

Statement (here in Greek) by the Communist Initiative of Cyprus on the ongoing developments in the Middle East:

Cyprus is dangerously being turned into a target for retaliation through the British bases. The drone attack on the NATO base in Akrotiri, combined with the official authorization granted by Britain to the United States shortly beforehand for the use of the British bases in operations against Iran, dramatically confirm the dangers created by deeper involvement.

"British imperialists out of Cyprus": Militant demonstration by the KKE at Akrotiri

A militant demonstration organised by the Cyprus Party Organisation of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) was held on Sunday outside the British RAF base at Akrotiri, from where airstrikes were launched against Syria

Carrying placards with slogans "NATO Killers Go Home" and KKE flags, the protesters called the working people of Cyprus to "assert their opposition to the facilitations given to the British butchers who are bombing the Syrian people. The British bases must be closed down now. Neither soil, nor water to the murderers of the people". Various international media (BBC, Associated Press, Sky News, etc.) reporting from Cyprus referred to the demonstration.
