The threats of an imperialist attack against Cuba, along with the demand for the immediate lifting of the country’s economic blockade and its removal from the list of “states sponsoring terrorism,” are highlighted in a parliamentary question submitted to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Members of the European Parliament, Kostas Papadakis and Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos.
The U.S. government, emboldened following its imperialist military intervention in Venezuela — supported by its Euro-Atlantic allies — is escalating the long-standing, inhumane and criminal blockade it has imposed on Cuba and is openly threatening the country with military intervention.
Through unacceptable pressure, threats, and blackmail directed at countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, in violation of every principle of international law, the U.S. government is isolating Cuba and depriving it of the right to procure oil and other fuels essential for electricity generation, transportation, and the functioning of its economy in general. In doing so, it obstructs the provision of food, social services, medical supplies, and medicines. According to unacceptable statements made by President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio, even the imposition of a full naval blockade of the Island of the Revolution is reportedly under consideration.
The objective of U.S. imperialism is to provoke economic suffocation and a humanitarian crisis in order to advance its dangerous plans, trample upon the choices of the Cuban people, and overthrow the country’s government along with the achievements of the Cuban Revolution.
As is well known, the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 65 years — in defiance of the successive and overwhelmingly supported resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly — has had enormous consequences, depriving the Cuban people of vital goods and services and causing damage to the Cuban economy exceeding 171 billion dollars, a figure that amounts to 2.1 trillion dollars at current value.
At the same time, anti-Cuban groups are being supported in various ways, carrying out subversive activities against the Cuban government and people. These groups enjoy support and warm hospitality within the European Parliament and participate in events organized by political groups, as recently denounced by the KKE European Parliamentary Group.
The Greek people, along with peoples around the world, have consistently and resolutely condemned the U.S. blockade and the hundreds of barbaric measures put into effect by the United States and its allies, as well as the unacceptable inclusion of Cuba on the so-called “state sponsors of terrorism” list, which further intensifies economic suffocation against the Cuban people.
They stand in solidarity with the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban people, who for decades have defended the achievements of the Cuban Revolution while confronting all forms of subversive actions and the hardships created by the escalating imperialist offensive of the United States.
On the basis of the above, the KKE Members of the European Parliament submitted the following questions:
“– What is the position of the Vice-President of the European Commission / High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Ms. K. Kallas, regarding the inhumane operation of economic strangulation imposed on Cuba by the United States, as well as the possibility of U.S. military intervention against a sovereign state?
– What is her position regarding the demand of the peoples to condemn and bring to an end the barbaric U.S. economic blockade against Cuba, to allow the country to procure fuel and all necessary supplies, food, medicines, and other essential goods without obstruction for the needs of the Cuban people, and to remove Cuba from the unacceptable “states sponsoring terrorism” list?”
