In a statement concerning the Greek government's disgraceful stance at the UN General Assembly on Cuba, the International Relations Section of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) notes:
"The New Democracy (ND) government has once again found itself on the wrong side of history, as, for the first time in 33 years, Greece abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly on Cuba's resolution demanding an end to the imperialist blockade.
Its stance is disgraceful and unacceptable! Along with a handful of other countries, it aligned itself with the US campaign against Cuba's resolution, which was nevertheless adopted by a large majority of 130 countries in the General Assembly.
The ND government's decision is yet another indication of its involvement in US-NATO imperialist plans against the peoples, at a time when the Trump administration is intensifying its threats against Cuba, even threatening armed intervention. Its stance makes it complicit in the ongoing crime of the blockade, which inflicts immense suffering and deprivation on the Cuban people, while paving the way for the acceptance of pretexts and support for a possible imperialist intervention — another crime.
Unfortunately for the ND government, the Greek people have deep and widespread feelings of friendship and solidarity with the heroic people of Cuba, who have resisted the brutal US blockade and threats for more than 60 years.
The KKE will continue to stand at the forefront of efforts to express its internationalist solidarity with the Cuban Revolution and its people through concrete action, and to condemn the imperialist aggression to which the Greek government is now also contributing".
