Jordanian and Israeli communists condemn deadly church attack, mourn Communist Party cadre

The Jordanian Communist Party and the Communist Party of Israel have strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan, which claimed eight lives, including that of Marwan al-Khaitan, a member of the Jordanian Communist Party's Central Committee. The massacre took place on Friday, October 23, during a funeral service at St. George's Church in Hammoud, near Karak, leaving dozens wounded.

In a statement, the Jordanian Communist Party denounced the attack as a heinous crime committed by sectarian extremists, aimed not only at innocent civilians but also at Jordan's national unity and religious coexistence. It described sectarian fanaticism as a reactionary ideology hostile to humanity and social progress, warning that religious hatred divides working people and diverts them from the struggle for democratic rights and social justice.

The party demanded a thorough investigation, prosecution of those responsible and a broader political and social struggle against extremism and sectarian incitement. It also paid tribute to Marwan al-Khaitan, a veteran communist who had endured imprisonment, dismissal from employment and political persecution for his convictions.

The Communist Party of Israel (CPI) and the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (Hadash) likewise condemned the massacre, expressing solidarity with the Jordanian people and their communist comrades. Their joint statement linked the attack to the wider activity of extremist organizations in the Middle East, arguing that such forces have been exploited in the service of imperialist, Zionist and reactionary interests.

The CPI and Hadash expressed confidence that the Jordanian people, through unity and solidarity, would confront sectarian terrorism and defend their country's social fabric.

Both communist parties emphasized the importance of resisting religious fanaticism and defending national unity, while mourning the loss of a communist militant who had devoted his life to the struggle for freedom, democracy and social progress.
