KKE expresses full solidarity with the workers-people's struggle in Sri Lanka

On the occasion of the large demonstrations in Sri Lanka, the Press Office of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) pointed out on 9 July:

“The KKE expresses its full solidarity to the great struggle of the working class of Sri Lanka. It condemns the brutal crackdown against the mass popular mobilizations which consist a decisive response to the rise in prices, the shortages in basic goods, the generalization of the people's impoverishment. It supports the struggle of the People's Liberation Front (JVP), the country's communists, for the overthrow of the anti-people policy and the defense of the workers and people's rights”.

A similar solidarity statement towards the workers and the people of Sri Lanka was issued by Greece's trade union powerhouse, the All-Workers Militant Front (PAME).

Speaking at a press conference held on 9 July, Anura Dissanayake, the leader of NPP and the JVP, said that Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who tried to protect his power by hiding inside the law, had to flee like other dictators in the world. He said that a step in the struggle has been won in a very democratic manner without shedding much blood.

He emphasized that since Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickramasinghe have not made an official statement that they will relinquish power, it should be done immediately. He said that this democratic public struggle’s real essence should be understood and carried forward to victory to recover the country’s looted wealth, conduct a fair investigation, and punish the culprits. He said people across the country and various organizations together with the NPP contributed a lot to get rid of this corrupt regime, and the activists of Galle Face made great sacrifices for that and expressed his and his party’s gratitude, devotion and respect.
