Joe Slovo with Nelson Mandela |
Born as Yossel Mashel Slovo on 23 May 1926 in Obelai, Lithuania, Slovo’s journey to South Africa at the age of nine marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to the working class and its struggles. His childhood hardships forced him to start working in a warehouse at the age of sixteen, where he encountered the harsh realities of capitalist exploitation.
On December 5 and 6, the 65th Summit of Presidents of Mercosur (Southern Common Market) was held in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay.
The meeting was attended by the presidents of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia -which recently became a full member of the bloc- and representatives of associated countries such as Colombia, Peru, Chile and Panama.
Imperialism is not the creation of any one or of any group of states. It is the product of a particular stage of ripeness in the world development of capital, an innately international condition, an indivisible whole, that is recognizable only in all its relations, and from which no nation can hold aloof at will…
- Rosa Luxemburg, The Crisis of German Social Democracy (1916)
The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the counterrevolutionary events in Eastern Europe in 1989-1991 marked the biggest blow to the international communist movement. Bourgeois thinkers, like the notorious Francis Fukuyama, predicted the “end of History”, as capitalism was emerging triumphantly victorious from the Cold War. Some Communist Parties were completely dissolved, others were incorporated into the emerging social democracy and many of them saw a dramatic shrink of their electoral influence.
More specifically, the statement (here in Greek) reads:
"But the harder the governments and the bourgeoisie of all countries try to disunite the workers and pit them against one another, and the more savagely they enforce, for this lofty aim, martial law and the military censorship (…), the more pressingly is it the duty of the class-conscious proletariat to defend its class solidarity, its internationalism, and its socialist convictions against the unbridled chauvinism of the “patriotic” bourgeois cliques in all countries"

Stalin's grave in Kremlin Necropolis |
Waiving soviet flags, holding portraits of Stalin and flowers, Communist Party members, workers, men and women, people of every age created a long queue in order to pay tribute to the late leader's grave at the Kremlin Necropolis. Similar events took place in other Russian cities as well, including Saint Petersburg (Leningrad).
The closing speech was delivered by the Party's General Secretary Paulo Raimundo, who stressed out the following:
We are working class patriots. We stand for justice, equality and overall goodness within and outside our country's borders.
It is widely known that wealth, all natural resources and power are usurped by a minority. Incentives, monetary policies, public expenditures, and tax regulations all serve the interests of this minority. The cabinet and all the institutions of the government implement policies to promote the interests of this minority.
— We are witnessing turbulent developments in Syria. Before we get into the facts, let us consider a less discussed aspect. Why is Syria so important? What is its significance in the Middle East?
The 2024 U.S. election has shocked many around the world with Donald Trump’s landslide victory. But his return should not be considered as an American phenomenon. In recent years the right-wing populist parties around the world have successfully garnered support from the political left working class by advocating for robust welfare states, albeit through a lens that is often chauvinist, nativist, and ethnonationalist.

Hadash MP Ayman Odeh |
Speaking at the Knesset Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday, December 10, the Hadash-Ta’al chair stated that, while Hamas’s attack on innocent civilians on October 7, 2023, constituted a “very deep moral injury,” expressing his opposition to “harming innocent people.” He also believed that every nation “has a right to struggle against its occupants.” “This is true in every place in the world, and this is the right of the Palestinian people,” said.
As noted in the introduction speech of the ECA Secretariat:
Communist Party of Greece (KKE)
The intervention in Syria and the domination of the jihadists is another link in the chain of the dangerous developments for the peoples that the imperialist powers of the USA, the EU, NATO, Turkey and Israel are carrying out in the wider Middle East region. It is a continuation of the ongoing massacre of the Palestinian people, the attacks on the Lebanese people and the targeting of Iran.
More specifically, Koutsoumbas said:
"In Syria, another war zone has been ignited on the global chessboard of imperialist competitions. There is another intervention that portends new sufferings for the people of Syria and the peoples of the region, new waves of refugees, possibly new border changes.
"The plan put into effect by the US imperialism and the reactionary forces in the region about 15 years ago in order for the disintegration of Syria has succeeded as of yesterday. The jihadist forces mobilised by the USA, Israel, Britain and the AKP government overthrew the Syrian government in a short period of one week.
In a statement, the Communist Initiative of Cyprus (Κομμουνιστική Πρωτοβουλία Κύπρου - Kıbrıs Komünist İnisiyatifi) stresses out:
The initiative was also attended ─ remotely─ by leaders of the World Federation of Trade Unions, the International Union of Trade Unions of Retired and Pensioned Persons, the World Federation of Teachers' Trade Unions, as well as central, federations, unions and fronts of workers and workers of the Canary Islands, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Morocco, Mexico, Niger and Uruguay.
Quite frequently, Omonia supporters have been seen waving flags with the sickle and hammer, banners with Che Guevara and other symbols of left-wing characteristics. Most recently, on 28 November, during a football match with Legia Warsaw for the UEFA Conference League in Nicosia, Omonia fans did it again!
