In a statement, the EU Parliament group of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) condemns the remarks made by Europarliament's President Antonio Tajani who praised fascist dictator Benito Mussolini during an interview.

More specifically, according to 902.gr portal, the KKE "denounces the unacceptable and provocative statements of nostalgia towards fascist Mussolini made by the president of the European Parliament A. Tajani, vice president of Berlusconi's party and member of the European People's Party (EPP)".

The KKE Euro-Parliamentary group also points out that it is not the first time that such statements have been made and that they consist part of the "consistent falsification of history and reveal the reactivity of both the EU as well as of its political personnel".

Antonio Tajani: "Mussolini did some positive things to build infrastructure in our country".

"Mussolini? Before he declared war on the entire world, following Hitler; before he introduced racial laws… he did some positive things to build infrastructure in our country," Tajani told Italian Radio24.

The fascist leader "built roads, bridges, buildings, sports facilities," and reclaimed large swaths of Italy from marshes, the EU Parliament's president added. "If we look at concrete facts, we can't say he hasn't achieved anything."

Tajani is deputy leader of Silvio Berlusconi's right-wing "Forza Italia" party and a member of the European People's Party.
