The activity of Syrian communists goes back to the 1920s with the foundation of the Syrian-Lebanese Communist Party in 1924. Despite its internal splits and divisions, the Communist Party had always been a progressive and democratic force, struggling for the rights of the Syrian people.
"On July 10, departments affiliated with the so-called “Self-Administration” in northeast Syria arrested Comrade Abdul Rahman Khalil, the nominated member of the Political Bureau of the Syrian Communist Party and a member of the People’s Assembly (Parliament), due to his participation in the electoral campaign for the People’s Assembly (Parliament). Comrade Abdul Rahman refused to sign a pledge not to participate in this campaign in exchange for his release.
