Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) achieves second consecutive election victory in Graz

The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) emerged as the clear winner in the municipal elections in the city of Graz, securing what has been described as its strongest electoral result to date and consolidating its position as the leading political force in the country's second-largest city.

According to the preliminary results, the KPÖ won 35.8% of the vote, improving significantly on its previous performance and finishing well ahead of the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP).

The election also marked a historic setback for the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), which fell to 5.6%, while the Greens recorded losses and the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) modestly increased its support.

Led by Mayor Elke Kahr, the KPÖ has governed Graz since 2021 through cooperation with other political forces and is expected to remain at the head of the city's administration following the latest result.

Although retaining the historic name of the Communist Party, the KPÖ has long pursued a reformist parliamentary strategy and participates in the so-called Party of the European Left, the political grouping in the European Parliament that brings together various left-wing and social democratic parties across Europe. In Graz, it has emphasized policies centred on housing, social welfare and municipal services.

The election outcome has been widely interpreted as a severe blow to Austria's traditional social democracy, with the SPÖ recording one of its weakest results in the city. At the same time, the strengthened position of the KPÖ provides it with broader options for forming a governing majority in the municipal council.

The result in Graz remains an exception within Austrian politics, where the KPÖ continues to have limited electoral influence at the national level despite its longstanding presence in the country's political landscape.
