KKE: U.S and Israel exploit fragile ceasefire as deadly strikes hit Lebanon

The Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) issued a statement regarding Israel’s deadly attacks on Lebanon and the statements made by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis:

“Israel’s deadly attacks on Lebanon—among the most lethal in recent weeks—demonstrate that the United States and Israel are exploiting the fragile ceasefire, which also included Lebanon, in order to recalibrate their attack tactics, at a time when none of the originally declared objectives of their imperialist intervention in Iran have been achieved.

At the same time, the statements by Mitsotakis—who described the killing of the Lebanese people as ‘counterproductive’—constitute yet another monument to cynicism. They are the result of Greece’s strategic alliance with the state-murderer Israel and of the country’s involvement in the war, supported by the other parties of the Euro-Atlantic camp and serving the interests of sections of Greek capital. Within this framework, the prime minister has assumed the role of a ‘front-runner’ in critical issues, such as the control of the Strait of Hormuz and the increase of military spending within the EU—developments that further complicate and intensify the situation.

These developments leave no room for complacency, as the overall course of events points toward further escalation, despite any fragile and temporary compromises. The sharpening of rivalries, energy and trade conflicts, and the struggle for dominance within the global imperialist system form the ‘big picture’—one that is paid for by the peoples.

At the same time, it is becoming evident that imperialism is not all-powerful, and that peoples can leave their mark on developments, guided by their own interests and in opposition to the system of exploitation and war.”
