"No to nuclear weapons!": Greek Communist Youth demonstrated at Araxos Air Base

With a banner writing "No nuclear weapons in Araxos, we will not become accomplices to murder", hundreds of young men and women, participants at the 27th Anti-imperialist camp of KNE, demonstrated on Saturday outside the military air base at Araxos, close to Patras.

Shouting slogans such as "EU and NATO, a syndicate of war" and "Neither soil nor water to the murderers of the people", the members and friends of the Communist Youth (KNE) protested against the policy of the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition government which has transformed Greece into a military base for NATO-USA-EU. The young protesters expressed their firm opposition to the plans of nuclear weapons' installation at Araxos Air Base.

The U.S. to set up new military bases in Greek islands, reports say

Does the U.S. government intend to install new military bases in Greece? According to news reports in Greece, U.S. military installations have been scheduled to take place in the Aegean Sea.

The Athens daily "Estia" reported that "the Ministry Defense has contacted the U.S. embassy and proposed the construction of a large heliport in a flat-island close to Kalymnos, in order to be used as a base for the landing and refueling of allied helicopters".

These scenarios are combined with the maintenance and upgrade process of the U.S-NATO military bases within Greece's territory, which was agreed during Prime Minister Tsipras' visit to Washington DC last October. In the northern city of Alexandroupolis, the U.S. have already set up a military base in the port, while there are plans for construction works in the Aegean island of Syros, the port of which could also be used as a hub for U.S-NATO forces.

Dangerous games - Does the US plan to install nuclear warheads in Greece?

On the 20th of September, the daily newspaper "Rizospastis"-organ of the CC of the KKE-on its front page highlighted the continuing suspicious and conspicuous silence of the government in relation to this accusation made by the KKE.

"Rizospastis" denounces the plans to transfer US nuclear weapons to Greece, which it characterizes as "playing with fire". At the same time, it reveals that the coalition government of the "left" party SYRIZA and the allegedly "patriotic" ANEL has agreed to provide upgraded services at the naval-airforce base of Souda, after the recent renewal of the agreement with the USA regarding its use. It is also discussing "hosting" US marines from Incirlik.
