KKE slams Greece-Israel “Achilles Shield” deal, warns of deeper involvement in imperialist wars

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has strongly condemned the Greece-Israel agreement on the so-called “Achilles Shield,” warning that it represents yet another dangerous step in accelerating war preparations and dragging Greece and its people deeper into imperialist wars and US-NATO plans in the region.

In a statement, the KKE stressed that the New Democracy government is attempting to conceal the real character of the agreement behind claims about an “architecture for the protection of Greek territory” and the country’s defense.

According to the Party, the strategic alliance with Israel and the joint military preparations of the two states do not protect the Greek people but instead add “fuel to the fire” of the sharpening imperialist rivalries in the region, including the contradictions between the ruling classes of Turkey and Israel, as well as between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

The KKE pointed out that the agreement, worth more than 3 billion euros, is part of the broader “Agenda 2030” armaments program, which is being implemented in accordance with NATO requirements. While workers and popular households are confronted with mounting problems and attacks on their rights, the Greek people are being called upon to pay tens of billions of euros for military programs serving the country’s deeper involvement in imperialist plans.

The Party also criticized the other bourgeois opposition parties, stressing that they have repeatedly supported the government’s strategic choices, military agreements and alliances whenever these correspond to the interests of Greek capital.

Concluding, the KKE underlined that the Greek people have no reason to share the government’s celebrations over the agreement. Instead, it called for increased vigilance and for the strengthening of the struggle against Greece’s involvement in imperialist wars and plans.
