KKE: New criminal US–Israel attack on Iran pushes the Middle East closer to a generalized war

In a statement (here in Greek) on the US–Israel attack on Iran, the Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) stresses the following:

“The new military attack by the state of Israel and the United States against Iran is a condemnable and criminal act that brings closer the prospect of a generalized war in the Middle East and the broader region.

The references to a ‘preemptive’ strike—echoed by the mouthpieces of Euro-Atlanticism in our country—are ridiculous and pretextual, when for months the intentions of the United States and Israel to launch a large-scale attack on Iran have been well known. For this very reason, an enormous U.S. firepower has been assembled and war preparations have intensified in order to impose their imperialist designs in the Middle East, including regime change in Iran.

There is more than a real danger that the war fronts in the region—such as the recent hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan—could lead to a broader conflagration.

The New Democracy government has entangled the country in U.S.–Israeli plans, even assuming the role of ‘standard-bearer.’ It has made the Souda base and other facilities available as a war launching pad, thereby exposing the people and the country to enormous dangers. It bears heavy responsibility, as do all the other parties of Euro-Atlanticism that support the strategic alliance with the state of Israel.

It is obvious that, following this latest development, any participation by the New Democracy government—such as sending Greek military forces as part of the falsely labeled U.S. ‘peace plan’ in Gaza—would amount to a criminal act against the Greek people. Any such plan must be scrapped.

At this moment, our people must strengthen their solidarity with the Iranian people and with all peoples who are victims of imperialist barbarity, demanding the closure of the Souda base and the other military bases, the withdrawal of the Greek Patriot missile battery from Saudi Arabia, and the return of the Hellenic Navy frigate from the Red Sea.”
