KKE backs campaign seeking Nobel Peace Prize for the Cuban medical brigades

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has endorsed the campaign which requests that the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize must be awarded to the “Henry Reeve” Cuban Medical Brigade for its internationalist activity.

Giannis Giokas, KKE MP and Secretary of the Greece-Cuba Friendship Group of the Parliament, has sent a letter to the Group’s members asking them to provide their support to cause.

In his letter, the Communist Party MP points out that from the very first moment of the COVID-19 outbreak, Cuba has contributed to the global effort against the pandemic.

As Giokas writes “Cuba has sent 45 Brigades of the ‘Henry Reeve’ International Force in 38 countries around the world, comprised of 3,772 doctors, nurses and health personnel. These scientists have treated more than 250,000 people infected with the COVID-19 virus, thus saving the lives of more than 8,000 patients”.

The KKE deputy also stresses out that “this great act of solidarity has been subject of worldwide acclaim and praise, especially since it comes from a small country which faces unacceptable sanctions and a multi-year criminal embargo imposed by the U.S. and their allies”. He furthermore mentions that Cuba has even offered valuable assistance to countries which participate in the embargo, in the midst of the collapse of their own health systems.

“The medical personnel of this International Brigade continue a long tradition of voluntary offer, solidarity and selflessness, having offered valuable assistance to more than 3.5 million people around the world, in cases of disasters and serious epidemics”, points out Giannis Giokas referring to the example of Cuban contribution to the fight against Ebola in Western Africa.

In Greece, more and more people endorse every day the Campaign (check Facebook page here) for the Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to the Cuban Medical Brigades. Among the numerous personalities that support the initiative is the emblematic music composer Mikis Theodorakis
