Joint statement by the KKE, AKEL, PCP and KSČM in the European Parliament against anti-communist initiative

A joint statement by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the Progressive Party of Working People of Cyprus (AKEL), the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) gives a response to the recent despicable, anti-communist proposal by five reactionary MEPs who are members of the European People's Party (EPP).

The joint statement, initiated by the KKE and addressed to the President of the European Commission and the College of Commissioners, condemns anti-communism and has been also sent to other MEPs for further signatures.

The text signed by the MEPs of the four parties is as follows:

"In a period when the peoples are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Great Anti-Fascist Victory, when, with the decisive contribution of the USSR and the Red Army, as well as the popular resistance in various countries, fascism was crushed and humanity was liberated from Nazi atrocities, it is a provocation that five EPP MEPs called for a petition to ban the hammer and sickle, symbols of the Soviet Union, the support of communist ideas, and the removal of Soviet and anti-fascist monuments."

These proposals distort history and come from anti-communist forces that insult the memory of the millions of people who died giving their lives for the anti-fascist victory and the peoples of Europe and their struggles against the fascist monster. This is yet another attempt to "cleanse" fascism and constitutes not only an attack against communists but also against other anti-fascists, as well as against the peoples and their rights, supported by forces that seek to distort the contribution of communists to the liberation struggle of the peoples, to cover up the failures of their anti-people policies, and to promote the far-right.

The attack against popular democratic rights and anti-communism will not prevail, Historical truth will triumph, and the people will emerge victorious once again, just like back then."

Yours Sincerely,
