Communist-backed Panspoudastiki triumphs in Greek university student elections

Celebration for the electoral victory in Athens.
In what can be characterized as an electoral triumph “Panspoudastiki KS” (All Student Cooperation Movement), supported by the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE), emerged first in the nationwide student elections held on Wednesday 18 May throughout the country's universities and technological institutes.

Thousands of students supported the lists of Panspoudastiki thus giving a significant boost for the regroupment of the students movement, especially during a period when the conservative New Democracy (ND) government tries to implement reactionary reforms in Education.

In most university departments, as well as in large institutes (including, for example, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Crete, University of Ioannina, etc) Panspoudastiki gained the first place, marking an incredible increase in votes since the last students elections in 2019.

In 232 out of 266 departments, Panspoudastiki KS has received 34.28%. The pro-governmental, right-wing DAP has received 26.65% and the social democratic PASP 11.39%. Leftist list EAAK gains 8.26%, while SYRIZA-backed BLOCO is at just 2.24% (click here for live results).

In the 2019 students elections Panspoudastiki KS had received 23.29% emerging second behind DAP who had been the primary force by 40.56%.

In a statement for the students elections, the General Secretary of the Central Council of the Communist Youth of Greece, Nikos Abatielos, points out among other things: “We salute the thousands of students who participated in and supported the ballots of Panspoudastiki. Today's result of the student elections fills us with optimism, but also with the responsibility to respond to the great task of militant regroupment of the students' movement, towards a direction of clash with policy that deprives students of their studies and the future they need”.
