KKE and AKEL condemn attack on UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus' buffer zone

KKE: The decision of the occupation authorities on Cyprus aims at the creation of fait accompli

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in an announcement on Saturday underlined that the occupation authorities in north Cyprus arbitrary decision to carry out unauthorised construction works for the opening of a road that would link the occupied village Arsos with Pyla (inhabited by Turkish-Cypriots and Greek-Cypriots) along with the attack against UN peacekeeping forces aims to the creation of fait accompli and triggers a dangerous tension in the area.

According to the same announcement, the decision of the occupation forces is taking place in a period that multiple 'bargains' are in progress which are supported by USA, NATO and EU with the participation of the Greek, Cypriot and Turkish bourgeoisie in the Aegean, the eastern Mediterranean and in Cyprus.

KKE underlines that the expectations that are cultivated in terms of USA, NATO and EU role are false. In practice and with their own responsibility, the Turkish occupation is maintained for 50 years on Cyprus and the island continues to be divided while the opening of the fenced-off city of Famagusta is advanced.

AKEL: The occupying power and the occupation regime is responsible for the attacks on United Nations Peacekeeping Force

AKEL denounces the attacks on UN peacekeepers by forces of the occupation authorities that took place today (18/8) in the buffer zone in Pyla. The violence and threats against the UN personnel constitute a serious crime and the responsibility lies with the occupying force and the occupation regime.

The attempt by the occupation authorities to violate the status quo and create new fait accompli by occupying part of the buffer zone in Pyla for road construction is totally reprehensible and unacceptable. Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership must respect the mission of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) within its mandate.

These machinations by the Turkish side are in addition to a series of other provocative actions that are further undermining safety on our island and damaging the prospects for a resumption of the negotiations and a solution to the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis and framework. These plans by Turkey and Tatar are dangerous for all Cypriots.
