Communist Workers Platform USA: Statement on Zohran Mamdani's NYC Mayoral Victory

On Tuesday, 4 November 2025, a cargo plane at UPS Worldport crashed into the facility during takeoff. 9 people have been confirmed killed while many remain missing.

The death toll will likely continue to rise, adding to the pile of workers killed by the cold calculus of capitalism where safety always takes a backseat to profit. That same evening, Zohran Mamdani claimed victory in the New York City Mayoral election.

Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and running as a member of the Democratic Party, has promised the city of 20 million people a laundry list of popular policies from free bus fares to rent control and more. He has maintained his commitment to the capitalist system, cozying up to the wealthy rulers of NYC, and ardently denying allegations of being a communist.

The chorus of celebrations following Mamdani's victory drowned out the horror of the UPS crash, just one example of the daily violence capitalism deals to our working class brothers and sisters. The system that treats our class like tools, is the system Mamdani has dedicated his career to. We will not dwell on his personal motivations or the tenacity of his supporters, but instead highlight the objective reality that Mamdani's campaign and now mayoral seat is not part of a working-class project but is ultimately putting a friendly face on the system of exploitation.

Capitalism is not an economy of "free enterprise" as its apologists claim. Capitalism is a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie over the working class, a social order founded on a simple, brutal equation: private ownership of the all of society by a small group of idlers accumulating ungodly wealth off our backs. The rest of us, the working class, are forced to sell our labor power to these owners to live. They pay us less than the value we create, pocketing the difference as profit. This is the essence of our exploitation under capitalism. It is why corners are cut on safety at Worldport, why rents are raised to unpayable heights, and why the police exist to protect private property & class domination, not human life. Under capitalism, human needs will always take a back seat to profit.

In choosing to run as a Democrat, in choosing to reform the system of exploitation rather than combat it, Mamdani objectively stands opposed to the interests of the workers. Even if he adopts the title “socialist”, he has made clear his intentions to put lipstick on the capitalist pig. At a critical moment when millions are losing SNAP benefits, ICE terrorizes migrant workers, Mamdani serves to sanitize the system responsible for all these horrors while telling millions what he stands for is "socialism". The responsibility to combat this confusion at this critical moment lies with those of us who take pride in the red flag, who proudly call ourselves communists and fight for the working class.

The Communist Workers' Platform USA is committed to the struggle against the capitalist system. We aim for nothing less then victory of the workers over the capitalists by the removal of the ruling capitalist class from all political power and the transition to a planned economy wherein every worker will be freed from the bondage of wage slavery once and for all. We refuse to allow the political project of Mamdani cause confusion in the movement  and remain steadfast in our commitment to workers' victory. We fight for a world where the atrocity in Louisville does not repeat, where workers will be safe and free.
