The statement reads:
The escalating conflict in the Middle East with the US attack on Iran entails nightmarish dangers to the peace and security not only of the region but also of the entire world.
AKEL joins its voice to the UN Secretary-General’s appeal for a return to diplomacy and in suggesting that there is no military solution to the issue. Above all, we join our voice with the millions around the world who are extremely concerned about the future of humanity and raise their voices for peace and against the new imperialist war.
The pretexts used by Trump and Netanyahu are blatantly hypocritical and a repeat of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and so on. The whole planet knows that when US and Israeli interests demand it, they cooperate perfectly well with theocratic regimes and dictatorships while not hesitating to support and instrumentalise fundamentalist terrorism. As for nuclear weapons, one should not forget that the only country in our region that is not a signatory to the UN Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and which has a proven nuclear arsenal is Israel.
AKEL recalls that the demand for the declaration of the entire Middle East as a nuclear-free zone and free from other weapons of mass destruction is more urgent and timelier than ever. At the same time, it expresses unreserved solidarity with all the peoples of the region who are experiencing the consequences of war.
Communist Initiative of Cyprus: Cyprus's involvement in imperialist plans deepens
In a statement, the Communist Initiative of Cyprus stresses out:
The Communist Initiative of Cyprus denounces the continuous transformation of the island into a base for foreign imperialist military interventions. The British bases are not “neutral”, nor do they concern the “security” of the region. They constitute a crucial link in the imperialist chain, financed, staffed and utilized to promote the interests of the monopolies and the war aspirations of the USA and NATO.
The direct involvement of the United States and the attack with high-powered bombs against Iran constitute a dangerous escalation of the imperialist war, not only in the Middle East but also on a global level. At this critical juncture, we call on the Cypriot government to take a clear position: to condemn the Israeli and US attack on Iran and to withdraw all forms of facilitation of foreign, and especially Anglo-American, troops.
Cyprus must not continue to provide territory and political cover for the war plans of the US, the UK and NATO. We demand that the government publicly take a position against the use of British bases as bases for attacks and adventurism against the peoples of the Middle East.
As the working class and popular strata, we have no interest in Cyprus being involved in war plans. On the contrary, we are becoming a target. Any conflict in the region puts the Cypriot people in immediate danger. We cannot remain indifferent to the worsening situation.
We demand:
- Immediate closure of the British bases.
- No involvement of Cyprus in the plans of the US, NATO and the EU.
- Detachment from every imperialist organization.
- Struggle for peace, cooperation and solidarity of the peoples of the region.
The Cypriot people must not pay the price of imperialist antagonisms. It is time to strengthen the struggle for disengagement and popular sovereignty, against the transformation of our homeland into a military bridgehead."
