#PeoplesBrigade: Over 1 million people attended a communist rally in Kolkata

Spectacular images came from India's Kolkata a few days ago, when over 1 million people gathered in the so-called "People's Brigade" rally.

The rally, which took place on February 3, was organized by the Left Front, a political alliance led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist)

The upcoming elections and the need for collective people's struggle against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was the major issue addressed by the speakers. Among those who addressed the huge crowd was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sitaram Yechury, who sharply criticized the Modi government.

"The Narendra Modi-led government is implementing anti-people policies in the country. Farmers are committing suicide and joblessness has increased to its peak in the last 45 years. It is time to change the government at the centre" said the CPI(M) leader, adding that "the country does not need leaders, but right policies. Left Front parties can give the right direction to policies".

Yechury underlined that governmental BJP party and the opposition All-India Trinamool Congress (TMC) are the two sides of the same coin. Among the CPI(M) cadres who addressed the "People's Brigade" were Politburo members Md Salim, Biman Bose and Surjya Kanta Mishra.
