Nikos Sofianos to be the Communist Party's candidate for mayor of Athens

Nikos Sofianos, an experienced cadre of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and a member of the Athens' City Council, will be the Party's candidate for the mayoralty of the Greek capital city in May 2019 elections. More specifically, the KKE Party Organisation of Attica announced the candidate mayors for the municipalities of Athens and Piraeus, as well as the candidate governor of Attica. 

For the municipality of Athens, the candidate will be Nikos Sofianos, 53, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the KKE, also member of the Athens City Council since 2010. He was the Secretary of the Central Council of the Communist Youth (KNE) from 1991 to 2001.

For the municipality of Piraeus, the KKE-supported candidate will be Diamanto Manolakou, 59, an agronomist by profession, member of the CC of the KKE and member of the Parliament for the constituency of Piraeus since 2008. Manolakou had served as KKE's member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008.

For the position of the regional governor of Attica, the candidate will be Yannis Protoulis, 41, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the KKE, also a member of the Attica regional council since 2014. He has been Secretary of the Central Council of KNE from 2007 to 2011 and a member of the Parliament for the Athens 'B constituency from 2007 to 2012.  Yannis Protoulis is responsible for the trade unionist section of the CC of the KKE and he was an elected member of the administration at the Labour Center of Athens between 2001 and 2006.

It has been also announced that the current, supported by the KKE, mayors of Kesariani (Ilias Stamelos), Haidari (Michael Selekos) and Petroupolis (Vangelis Simos) will run at the Greek local elections in May 2019.
