The mobilization stands in sharp contrast to the policy of the New Democracy government, which has deepened Greece’s strategic alignment with Washington and facilitating US-NATO military operations.
PAME points to the expanding network of US bases and facilities, including Souda and the strategic use of Alexandroupolis, Larissa and Stefanovikio, arguing that Rubio’s visit seeks further commitments for US-NATO military and energy plans. The organizations also stress that this course did not begin with ND, noting that the Greece-US “Strategic Dialogue” was launched under the previous SYRIZA government.“The workers do not accept the US Secretary of State, the butcher of war, in our country!” PAME declares, linking Rubio’s visit to the escalating conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. It rejects government claims that deeper involvement with the United States and NATO provides security, arguing instead that turning Greece into a military hub exposes the Greek people to greater dangers.
PAME also links military involvement directly to the everyday interests of the working class, contrasting billions spent on armaments and NATO commitments with workers’ needs for wages, healthcare and education. It highlights the actions of dockworkers who have blocked military cargo destined for Israel as an example of organized working-class opposition to Greece’s involvement in war plans.
Ahead of Rubio’s arrival, PAME and EEDYE are calling for a powerful response in the streets: no further involvement in imperialist wars, no additional facilities for US-NATO operations, closure of the US-NATO bases and the return of Greek military forces from missions abroad. As PAME puts it: “Greece out of the war! Neither land nor water to the killers of the peoples!”.
