In a statement issued on Thursday, the Press Bureau of the CC of the KKE refers to the the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict as the outcome of competitions between the bourgeois classes in the region and stresses out the dangers that arise from the intersection of interests of Turkey and Russia in the broader region.
More specifically, the statement reads:
“The recent armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia which lasted for more than 40 days, bloodying the people and first of all the youth of these two former Soviet Republics, was due to the confrontation between different plans of the bourgeois classes, as well as because of their common aspiration, in conditions of capitalist crisis, to strengthen the sterile and dangerous ground of nationalisms and people's mutual slaughtering, so as not to endanger their power.
At the same time, the involvement of other bourgeois classes such as the one of Turkey, which openly supported Azerbaijan's military operations in order to expand its geopolitical footholds in the region of Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, became even more apparent in this conflict.
The agreement signed between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, for peace in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, puts its stamp on the new balance of power that is being formed in the Caucasus and the Caspian region. Russia expands its military presence by developing “peacekeeping forces” in Nagorno-Karabakh and by securing its road connection with Armenia. Through its participation in the so-called “peace center” which will be established in Azerbaijan, NATO's Turkey acquires a new “role” in a particularly critical region, which is a link connecting the Black Sea with the Caspian Sea, thus strengthening even further its political-military presence.
In any case we are talking about a temporary agreement that bears the fundamental characteristics of imperialist “peace”, like occupation and exchange of territories as well as existence of foreign protectors. However, this “crossover” of the aspirations of the bourgeois classes of Russia and Turkey in another region, in Caucausus and the Caspian Sea, may create the conditions for a new ignition in the future.
The people of Armenia and Azerbaijan, who for decades in the past lived peacefully building a new socialist society, are today, in conditions of capitalism, paying with their blood the promotion of those or other – but always strange to their own – capitalist interests. To the extend that the people are taught by their history, they have the power to rise a front both against the foreign imperialist interventions, as well as to the interests of the bourgeois classes, and can build their own “wall” against imperialist wars, to pave a strategy of clash with the capitalist system which generates crises, wars and refugees”.
