In a meeting marked by internationalist solidarity and a combative spirit, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Dimitris Koutsoumbas, welcomed on Wednesday at the KKE headquarters in Perissos, Athens, a delegation of the National Assembly of Vietnam, headed by Vice-Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai.

The talks took place on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Greece and Vietnam, with both sides stressing that their ties are not merely state-to-state, but above all bonds forged in decades of common struggle against imperialism, war, and oppression.
Koutsoumbas delivered a broad presentation of the KKE’s activity, noting the 107 years of heroic struggle of the Greek communists who, as he said, “have passed through fire and iron.” He pointed to the party’s continuous efforts to keep Greece out of imperialist war plans, to strengthen the fight against NATO and the EU, and to stand by the oppressed — most urgently the Palestinian people facing genocide.
He emphasized the KKE’s growing influence across the working class and people’s movements: in trade unions, rural areas, professional associations, and among the youth, underscoring the party’s increased presence in the recent elections and mass struggles. Koutsoumbas also briefed the delegation on the party’s roadmap leading up to the 22nd Congress of the KKE in January 2026.

Speaking for the Vietnamese side, Vice-Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai thanked Koutsoumbas for the thorough update and expressed high appreciation for the historical role of the KKE in Greek political life and in supporting Vietnam’s liberation struggle — against French colonialism, U.S. imperialist intervention, and the embargo of the 1970s.
He singled out the late Kostas Sarantidis (Nguyen Van Lap), the Greek fighter who joined the ranks of the Vietnamese revolution, as a living symbol of proletarian internationalism.
Nguyen expressed the hope that the meeting would strengthen bilateral ties and extended an invitation for Koutsoumbas to visit Vietnam in the near future. The Vietnamese side also outlined their country’s economic development goals, preparations for the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and for the National Assembly elections of 2026, noting the challenges posed by international pressure and imperialist encirclement.
The encounter concluded with the exchange of commemorative gifts and a reaffirmation of the will to deepen contact and cooperation between the two parties.
