Communist Party of Turkey: "Turkey Must Withdraw from NATO, Foreign Military Bases Must be Closed"

The following statement, prepared by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), is being widely disseminated as a declaration by all TKP organizations throughout Turkey and is actively reaching the public:

This is a REAL option for our country. It is essential to ensure the security of our people and the full exercise of sovereignty of our country.

There are other facts as well:

1) There are at least 28 NATO bases operating on our soil. Turkey has virtually no authority over the military systems and heavy weaponry stationed at these bases.

2) NATO is an alliance whose main priority is to protect the interests of international capital. Although it claims equal membership, in reality NATO serves the domination of leading imperialist powers over other countries. All NATO member states transfer certain aspects of their sovereignty to the alliance.

3) The interests of multinational monopolies have nothing to do with those of our people. Yet, due to NATO membership, Turkey has been made a direct or indirect partner in crimes committed across the world—such as the American occupation of Korea, the dismemberment of Yugoslavia, and the destruction of Syria.

4) Since joining NATO in 1952, Turkey has been subjected to pressure and threats by the alliance. The Cyprus issue, starting in 1964, is a clear example of this.

5) The world is witnessing more and more conflicts fueled by NATO’s expansionism. Turkey is being dragged into a ring of fire, and under these conditions, NATO poses the greatest threat to our security. Dozens of nuclear warheads, over which we have no control, make our country a nuclear target in others’ wars.

6) In line with the interests of imperialism and international capital, NATO has developed a habit of interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries. This has long posed a major threat to struggles aiming to change the exploitation system.

7) Every time the people of this country have risen for an independent and sovereign Turkey free from exploitation, NATO forces within have mobilized: coups, political assassinations, plots, and sabotage have been used to manipulate internal politics. NATO functions as a “fifth column,” especially within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and other key state institutions.

8) Everything and everyone we wish to change in this country is linked to NATO. Turkey’s withdrawal from NATO would, in essence, signify the removal of NATO from Turkey.

EITHER NATO or an INDEPENDENT TURKEY!

FOREIGN MILITARY BASES MUST BE CLOSED!

This is a REAL option for our country. It is essential to ensure the security of our people and the full exercise of sovereignty of our country.

There are other facts as well:

1) There are around 30 foreign military bases on our soil. These bases include radar systems, weapons depots, logistical hubs, and surveillance stations. All strategic assets within these bases are under U.S. and NATO control.

2) Nearly 2,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed in Turkey, primarily at İncirlik (Adana), Kürecik (Malatya), and İzmir, and serve under the command of U.S. and Western imperialism.

3) The İncirlik Air Base in Adana has been actively used for airstrikes in wars that Turkey is not a part of. It was involved in the U.S.-led military operations against Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. During the Cold War, reconnaissance flights against the Soviet Union were conducted without Turkey’s consent or knowledge directly from İncirlik.

4) At least 50 B-61 nuclear bombs belonging to the U.S. are stored in İncirlik. These weapons are locked with PAL (Permissive Action Link) systems. Turkey has neither access to nor authority over these nuclear weapons.

5) The Kürecik Radar Base in Malatya, which was equipped with an AN/TPY-2 radar in 2012, plays a critical role in U.S. military interventions in our region. This radar tracks missile activity in the Middle East, providing early warnings to the U.S. and Israel. During conflicts involving Iran and Israel, Kürecik operated as part of Israel’s early warning system. Turkey has no control over the data collected by this base. Over 300 U.S. troops are stationed there.

6) The 3rd Main Jet Base in Konya hosts NATO’s AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft. U.S. military personnel operate these planes, which monitor Syrian airspace. For years, Israeli pilots were also trained at this base.

7) The Çiğli Air Base in İzmir hosts the U.S. Air Force’s 16th Air Squadron. The U.S. uses this base for logistics and personnel rotations in regional operations. The I-HAWK and Roland defense systems stationed at Çiğli have a range that does not extend beyond the borders of Turkey and Greece. These weapons are aimed at the peoples of Turkey and Greece.

8) As is evident, dozens of military bases on our soil are placed at the service of imperialism through NATO treaties and various bilateral agreements.

9) Therefore, our country constantly faces the risk of being dragged into wars and conflicts beyond our control. Turkey must withdraw from these illegitimate agreements and must immediately terminate all foreign military presence on our soil.

EITHER U.S. TROOPS or OUR SOVEREIGNTY!
