KKE and AKEL condemn new Israeli assault on Gaza solidarity flotilla

On Monday 18 May, Israeli forces intercepted a solidarity flotilla (Global Sumud Flotilla) carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in waters near Cyprus, triggering strong reactions from political parties in Greece and Cyprus. Both the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and AKEL (Progressive Party of Working People) condemned the operation as a violation of international law and denounced the continuing blockade and military actions against the Palestinian people.

The Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) issued the following statement regarding the new act of piracy carried out by the Israeli state against a solidarity flotilla bound for Gaza:

“The KKE condemns the new act of piracy carried out by the terrorist state of Israel against a solidarity flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, which took place off the coast of Cyprus.

Such criminal actions are increasingly becoming normalized with the tolerance of the governments of the region, including those of Greece and Cyprus.

Immediate measures must be taken to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. All military and other forms of cooperation with the state of Israel must cease immediately. Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people, shedding the blood of the Lebanese people, and stands with its ‘finger on the trigger’ against the people of Iran.

The independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders must be recognized, in accordance with the unanimous resolution adopted by the Greek Parliament in 2015.”

AKEL Condemns Israeli Attack on the Global Sumud Solidarity Flotilla

“AKEL condemns the new Israeli attack against the Global Sumud solidarity flotilla, which was heading toward Gaza carrying humanitarian aid.

This is not the first time that the far-right Netanyahu regime has acted like a pirate state, violating international law and preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the suffering Gaza Strip.

Throughout the ongoing genocide, there has not been a single provision of international law that Israel has not violated. Yet the Christodoulides government cannot find a single word to condemn the stance and barbarity of the Netanyahu regime.

AKEL calls on the Christodoulides government to condemn the attack and align itself with the rest of the international community, which demands the immediate and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza.”
