In a warm and deeply comradely atmosphere, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Dimitris Koutsoumbas, held a meeting on Friday afternoon with a delegation of the Communist Party of Sweden (SKP) at the party’s offices in Skarpnäck, Stockholm. The Swedish delegation was headed by the leader of SKP, Andreas Sörensen.

From the side of the KKE, the meeting was attended by Zisis Lymberidis, member of the Central Committee and head of the Party’s Foreign Committee; Kostas Papadakis, member of the Central Committee and Member of the European Parliament; Panos Apergis, Secretary of the KKE’s Scandinavia Regional Organisation; and Vasilis Lazaridis, Secretary of the Stockholm Local Organisation.

At the opening of the meeting, Dimitris Koutsoumbas expressed the condolences of the KKE for the innocent people who recently lost their lives in the tragic accident in central Stockholm. He underlined that it is both an honour and a joy to meet the Communist Party of Sweden, a party with which the KKE maintains fraternal relations. He highlighted that cooperation between the two parties is very good, both bilaterally and within the framework of European Communist initiatives and the International Meetings of Communist and Workers' Parties.

The discussion focused on the situation within the international communist movement and on the struggles being waged by the two parties in their respective countries. Particular emphasis was placed on the escalation of the capitalist attack against workers’ rights and popular needs, the sharpening of inter-imperialist rivalries, the dramatic rise in military expenditures and the heavy consequences these developments impose on the peoples.

The two parties also exchanged valuable experiences from their intervention in the labour-union movement and workplaces, as well as the role of the communist youth in the student movement. Both sides examined ways to deepen and systematise their cooperation in these areas.

In a symbolic gesture of friendship, the Swedish delegation presented Dimitris Koutsoumbas with a painting inspired by the class struggle of the Swedish working class, along with local traditional products.

The meeting reaffirmed the common understanding of the heightened tasks and responsibilities facing communists today, as they confront the intensified capitalist offensive on labour, youth and the popular strata, both on a national and international level.
