Communist Party of the Workers of Spain names Ástor García as Prime Ministerial candidate

The Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) has announced that its General Secretary, Ástor García Suárez, will be its candidate for Prime Minister in the November 29 general election, presenting the communist ballot as an expression of independent working-class opposition to the capitalist political consensus.

In a statement published on social media, the PCTE declared that its electoral campaign would confront the capitalist consensus and that communists would actively participate in the election campaign with determination and enthusiasm.

García, a teacher and trade unionist born in Oviedo in 1978, previously stood as the party's candidate for Prime Minister in the 2023 general election. He is also heading the PCTE's parliamentary list in Asturias.

The announcement follows the Political Bureau's October 7 decision to contest the elections, arguing that neither the social-democratic government nor the right-wing opposition offers a genuine solution to the problems confronting Spain's working class.

In its subsequent October 12 declaration, the PCTE called for the construction of an independent working-class opposition, linking the struggle for affordable housing, higher wages and improved working conditions with the broader objective of socialist transformation.

The party has sharply criticized attempts to subordinate workers to the electoral calculations of competing bourgeois political blocs, insisting that the fight against reaction cannot justify abandoning an independent communist political perspective.

For the PCTE, participation in the elections is not an end in itself, but part of the wider struggle to strengthen communist organization in workplaces, neighborhoods and educational institutions.

As Spain approaches the November 29 vote, the party is seeking to present a distinct revolutionary alternative to the political forces competing to administer capitalism.
