In a statement, the Press Office of the Central Committee of the KKE stresses:
The Greek people, however, must resist the country’s deepening involvement in the blood-soaked military, energy and economic plans of the United States and NATO in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, which will demand further sacrifices from them and their children.
As Greece’s involvement in war fronts stretching from Ukraine to Iran intensifies, with the crucial role of Souda and Alexandroupolis being reaffirmed and a new deployment to the Strait of Hormuz under the pretext of ‘freedom of navigation’ — in other words, for the profits of the shipowners — our people will experience even more painfully the transformation of the country into an aggressor against other peoples and a target for retaliation on multiple fronts. The myth of Greece as a pillar of security has collapsed.
Three years after the beginning of the genocide in Gaza, the glorification of the strategic relationship with the murderous state of Israel makes it particularly outrageous to suggest that our people could somehow benefit from the suffering of the Palestinian people.
When the US energy plans involving the ‘Vertical Corridor’ and the transportation of exorbitantly expensive American natural gas are unanimously presented by the government, PASOK and Tsipras’ party as a ‘national cause,’ it is because Greek business groups stand to benefit — certainly not the people, who are condemned to energy poverty and soaring prices.
Nor will the supposedly ‘national objective’ of turning Greece into an energy hub guarantee energy security and prosperity for the people. On the contrary, it draws them into ruthless energy rivalries and wars, as the tragic experiences of Ukraine, Syria and elsewhere demonstrate.
When new, enormously expensive military equipment, acquired under the supposedly defensive agreement with the United States, is repeatedly used to meet NATO’s needs, workers will be forced to make sacrifices and go without what they truly need. Meanwhile, expectations that the United States would support Greece in its disputes with Turkey have been dashed yet again.
Today, as the US Secretary of State, with the assistance of the Greek government, has laid out the agenda of war page by page, workers must put forward their own independent agenda through their own independent action: disengagement from imperialist war plans, loudly declaring: ‘No sacrifice for their profits and their wars!’
P.S. Finally, the New Democracy government bears a grave responsibility for allowing a historic site such as the Pnyx to become the backdrop for the reactionary, warmongering address of the US Secretary of State”.
