PAME has likewise called on trade-union centers, federations and unions throughout Greece to organize mobilizations during the visit. “Rubio is not coming to exchange pleasantries,” it stressed, arguing that Washington is seeking new commitments, an upgraded agreement on US bases, further access to Greek ports, airports and military installations, and deeper Greek participation in US war and energy plans. The organization demands an end to Greece’s involvement in US-NATO-EU wars, the closure of US-NATO bases, the return of Greek military forces deployed abroad and an end to military cooperation with Israel.
EEDYE described Rubio as a “war hawk” and said his visit comes as war fronts are expanding and Greece’s involvement is deepening. Pointing to the forthcoming sixth round of the Greece-US “Strategic Dialogue,” the peace movement warned that the so-called strategic relationship has meant more military bases and infrastructure and the increasing use of Greek territory as a war staging ground.
The message is unequivocal: no new bases, no new military commitments and no sacrifices by the Greek people for imperialist wars and profits. “Marco Rubio is unwelcome".
