Following the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won a historic victory with nearly 44% of the vote, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) stresses that the rise of reactionary populism cannot be separated from capitalist exploitation, imperialist rivalries and the weakening of the class-oriented labour and communist movement.

“The attack on workers’ and people’s rights by the bourgeois political forces — liberals, social democrats, the pseudo-‘left’ and others — the sharpening social contradictions in every country on the terrain of capitalist exploitation and imperialist rivalries, combined with the absence of a strong, class-oriented labour and communist movement, are the factors that, in Germany and elsewhere, are ‘pushing’ disappointed sections of the people into the nets of far-right and supposedly ‘anti-system’ populism.
Moreover, under conditions of preparation for war, such forces become even more useful to the system, sowing the poison of racism and nationalism among workers and the peoples, so that the main culprit remains untouched: the dominant anti-people policy, the EU of capital and war, and the capitalist system itself.
The people, especially in the regions of the former German Democratic Republic, have suffered the dramatic consequences of the overthrow of socialism 35 years ago. This is why even forces of far-right populism, such as the AfD, resort to ‘peddling nostalgia’ in an attempt to entrap working-class and popular forces and incorporate them into reactionary plans. It is on this terrain that the EU also cultivates the ahistorical ‘theory of the two extremes’, which ultimately serves to exonerate reactionary and fascist forces — forces which the EU itself consistently supports and strengthens in order to advance its geopolitical and economic interests.
The answer to the far right, as well as to the usual bankrupt and false political dilemmas that are being constructed, can only be given by a revitalized workers’ and people’s movement, by the class struggle and by the struggle against the causes that feed these reactionary currents — causes rooted in the EU itself, in imperialist wars and rivalries".
