The Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) issued the following statement (here in Greek) regarding developments in the Middle East war and the deployment of military forces to Cyprus:
“The latest dramatic developments in Cyprus, as well as in other countries of the region, in themselves demand that Greece disengage here and now from the flames of war ignited by the United States and Israel with their military attack on Iran.

Instead, the Greek government is not only refusing to recall the Greek military forces currently stationed in Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea, but is also announcing the dispatch of Greek frigates and fighter aircraft, escalating step by step Greece’s involvement in the bloodshed of war.
The pretext that this is being done to defend the ‘defense of Cyprus’ is yet another colossal and shameless lie. The role of the Greek military forces in Cyprus will be to protect the British bases on the island and other NATO infrastructure — the very forces that bear responsibility for the Turkish invasion and occupation.
At the same time, the government spokesperson’s cynical admissions regarding Greece’s inclusion under France’s ‘nuclear umbrella,’ as well as the dangers faced by Greeks in the Middle East — including the personnel operating the Patriot missile battery in Saudi Arabia — amount to a confession that the government is backing the disastrous plans of the U.S. and NATO in the region at any cost.
As long as the New Democracy government, with the tolerance of the other political parties, continues to provide bases and other infrastructure as launching pads for war, and to adopt and reproduce the absurd pretexts of the United States and Israel for their criminal attack on Iran, the risk that the Greek people themselves may become a target of retaliation is more than real.
At these critical hours, no one can pretend not to understand!
What is required now is a popular uprising to shut down all military bases — from Souda in Crete to Alexandroupoli and Larissa — to withdraw the Greek Patriot missile battery from Saudi Arabia, and to bring back all naval frigates, F-16 fighter jets, and every Greek vessel currently deployed in the region.
The imperialists’ war is not our war. It is in the interest of the Greek people to strengthen the struggle for Greece’s disengagement from the war.”
