Communist Parties of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East hold teleconference on U.S–Israel war in the region

A teleconference with Communist and Workers’ Parties from the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Persian Gulf was held yesterday at the initiative of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), in response to the serious developments in the region following the launch of the imperialist attack by the United States and Israel against Iran.

According to 902 portal report, in addition to the KKE, representatives of ten other parties participated in the teleconference. All participants emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that it contributes both to the analysis of the situation and to the coordination of the communists’ actions.

Specifically, the following parties took part: the Algerian Party for Democracy and Socialism (PADS), the Jordanian Communist Party, the Tudeh Party of Iran, the Communist Party of Israel, AKEL (Cyprus), the Palestinian People’s Party, the Palestinian Communist Party, the Sudanese Communist Party, the Syrian Communist Party, and the Communist Party of Turkey.

The introductory address was delivered by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas.

Referring to the new criminal attack launched by the United States and Israel against the people of Iran, he stressed that it “has already cost the lives of hundreds of civilians and caused enormous material destruction both in Iran and in other countries of the region,” while the flames of the conflict are spreading across the Gulf states as well as the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Caspian region, and the Caucasus.

Dimitris Koutsoumbas placed particular emphasis on the involvement of the New Democracy government—supported by the other bourgeois parties—in the imperialist wars and the strategic plans of the United States, NATO, and the European Union, “seeking to upgrade the position of the Greek bourgeoisie by turning the country into an energy and transportation hub and by claiming a larger share of the spoils of imperialist wars and interventions.”

He noted that Greece hosts NATO and U.S. military bases, sends weapons to Ukraine, and participates in imperialist military missions abroad. This involvement, he stressed, “not only fails to guarantee the security of the people, but also turns the country into a target for retaliation and has already set in motion developments that challenge sovereign rights.”

The General Secretary of the KKE Central Committee pointed out that the Party rejects the pretexts put forward by the imperialists and exposes the real causes of the conflict, such as the creation of the economic and geopolitical space of the “New Middle East,” the competition among monopolies over the implementation of the “Indian Trade Corridor,” in rivalry with China’s “New Silk Road” and the strategic plans of Iran.

He referred to the strategy of the United States, which “envisages systematic steps—whether through economic, diplomatic and political means, or through military means—to strengthen the positions of American monopolies at the expense of their competitors, first and foremost China, which today constitutes a powerful capitalist economy that competes with the United States on many fronts and seeks to build its own Eurasian alliance.” He added that “within this strategy, Iran—and control over it—constitutes a key link.”

In Greece, the KKE works to inform and raise awareness among workers “that an imperialist war is not the people’s war,” Dimitris Koutsoumbas underlined, adding:

“Now is a moment of responsibility for each and every one. The stance the people take in the face of these sweeping developments will be decided now. Above all, it is necessary for them to dissociate themselves from the plans that are leading them toward disaster and to shape a line of struggle based on their own real interests. The position adopted by the popular forces toward this policy of involvement can truly influence the course of events.”

He stressed further:

“It is necessary to strengthen the struggle against the rotten system of profit, which is synonymous with exploitation and war, in order to break the ‘chain’ that is dragging the people into the abyss. The way must be opened for overthrow, for a new society—for socialism–communism—the society of genuine prosperity, peace, and solidarity with the peoples of the whole world.”

Both in the introductory speech and in the interventions of the party representatives, special emphasis was placed on solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle against Israeli occupation—for a free homeland and the return of the refugees—as well as solidarity with the people of Cuba, who have long been a target of imperialism.

Dimitris Koutsoumbas also informed the participants in the teleconference about the large solidarity rally with Cuba that took place the previous day in Greece, as well as the march to the U.S. embassy.
