KKE MEPs denounce anti-Cuba event in the European Parliament: Letter to Roberta Metsola

A protest letter to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, was sent by the European Parliament Group of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) regarding the holding of an event organized by the far-right ECR (European Conservatives and Reformists) entitled “Cuban Mercenaries in the Russian Attack on Ukraine.”

An event openly hostile toward Cuba, at a time when the dangers of imperialist intervention are intensifying.

The KKE MEPs denounced the European Union’s “à la carte sensitivities,” which on the one hand tolerate such events, while on the other reject solidarity exhibitions on the Cuban medical brigades that assisted during the pandemic, claiming that they contained “aggressive content.”

In their letter (read here in Greek), the KKE MEPs state the following:

"With this letter we wish to express our strong protest regarding your approval — based also on the new unacceptable internal regulations — of the event that took place on Wednesday, 14 January, at the European Parliament in Brussels, entitled: “Cuban Mercenaries in the Russian Aggression Against Ukraine,” which was co-organized by members of the far-right ECR Group (European Conservatives and Reformists) and an organization calling itself the “Assembly of the Cuban Resistance” (ARC).

Speakers at the event, aside from ECR MEPs, included U.S. congress members known for their hostile stance toward Cuba and for supporting all kinds of interventions in its internal affairs, Ukrainian parliamentarians, and members of organizations that work subversively with the aim of overthrowing the Cuban Government — some of whom have openly advocated U.S. intervention in Cuba.

The unacceptable approval by the European Parliament for the organization of this event — which had an openly hostile and subversive character toward Cuba and its people, who are currently in the crosshairs of U.S. aggression, as indicated by statements made by President Trump in the aftermath of the military intervention in Venezuela — and, on the other hand, the prohibition by the services of the European Parliament, with your tolerance, of holding within its premises the exhibition on the “Henry Reeve Medical Brigades and Cuba’s International Solidarity” in January 2025, organized by MEP Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos, clearly demonstrates the unacceptable “double standards” adopted by the European Parliament.

The fact that an exhibition dedicated to the selfless contribution and solidarity of Cuban doctors in addressing pandemics and humanitarian disasters in many countries around the world was banned under the provocative claim that it had “aggressive and offensive content,” while an event openly calling for imperialist intervention in Cuba and promoting war-mongering rhetoric targeting Cuba in the context of the imperialist war in Ukraine was allowed to proceed, exposes the European Parliament’s bias and its “à la carte” display of sensitivities depending on the major interests it ultimately serves.

We expect your response on this serious matter."
