As announced by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the proceedings of its 22nd Congress were completed today with the election of the new Central Committee and the new Central Committee for Financial Control.
“The Central Committee, at its first meeting, unanimously elected Dimitris Koutsoumbas as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE,” the announcement states.

Born in 1955, a long-time Party cadre, Koutsoumbas was elected into the party's Central Committee in 1987 and in 1996 to the Political Bureau. He has served as director of Rizospastis, the KKE's official organ.
He got elected as General Secretary in the 19th Party Congress on 14 April 2013, succeeding Aleka Papariga.
